Dumb question about cooling

Ok I'm attempting to cool my athlon 1800+. I have a thermalright slk-800 heatsink, all copper. I'm trying to put a fan on. Is the fan supposed to be blowing air onto the heatsink?? Or is it supposed to suck hot air out of it?? And as a side note, how do I know which way the fan actually blows the air without actually turnin the comp on and havin it be the wrong way. Thanks for yer help guys!

Airflow should blow down onto the SLK800. Matter of fact, that's the orientation for probably 90% of all heat sink designs. Only the shroud-covered designs, like the Alpha PAL6035 and PAL8045, are designed to have the fan draw air up away from the HS.

Most fans have two "arrows" molded into their plastic frame somewhere around the circumference. One arrow will point up or down, indicating air flow direction, and the other arrow will point clockwise or counter-clockwise indicating fan blade spin direction. Just look for the arrows.

Dead on about the molds. Thanks for the info. One more question for you. What 60/70/80 mm fan provides the best performance(CFM) but with reasonable sound?? Cuase right now I'm runnin it with a vantec stealth, I tried to take the silent approach. Its silent alright cause it runs under 3000 RPM, but it only moves 27CFM and my temps are around 70 on full load. So much for that bright idea.....time to buy more powerfull/louder fan.....any suggestions??

Temps too high.

If you want a good solution, get a sunon KD1208PTS2-6 (12V DC / .18 Amps / 2.1 Watts / 2900rpm / 39cfm)

Great: Sunon KD1208PTS2-6B (12V DC / .36 Amps / 4.3 Watts / 3900rpm / 50cfm)

Extreme: vantec tornado (sunon TD8038H). 84CFM.

miggetyMike,
I quick way to tell which way the air is going to blow is just by looking at it's two sides. The back of the fan sucks the air in and then it is blown out the front side of the fan, the side with the brand name or logo on it. Easy enough?

Check out newegg , look under Y S Tech fans. They have two 80mm X 25mm models, one with rpm control, the other w/o. Check out the specs for either model: 48.5 cfm @ 3700 rpm/ 37 dBA.

Also, 70*C is awfully high. Make sure hsf is making proper contact and use Arctic Silver 3 or similar compound. Heat pads are garbage.

miggetyMike,
Something else you might want to take a look at is the Nexus Fan Controller. I know that you were looking for a quiet HSF but if you really want a quiet system all together this could really help. I got it and I like it a real lot. There are 4 control knobs so you can control 4 case fans (but I have two fans hooked up to the first knob )

If you are intersted check it's review out here

Its a really cool mod. The back of the knobs light up blue and everything!

Thanks for the suggestions guys. Yeah that Nexus fan controller is pretty sweet. I'll probably pick one up if I can't find a bearable sound level with the fan suggestions you guys have. Thanks a lot!

YS-Tech fans have reported to have a rather high fail rate compared to traditional fans.

miggetyMike.
Just pick up some nice strong fans and keep them up with the Nexus Fan Controller when your gaming, half way when you doing little stuff, all the way down when you go to sleep or you arn't using it at all.

Where did you come across this info? I've used them for years and never had problems. I'd like to read the source of this information.
Thanks,

Certain model YS-Tech fans. On and off they're bad -- and you, Jmincha, as with your CPU, got lucky.
