need help chooseing new hdd

my hdd [maxtor 7200 rpm model # 53073h4] is slowly dieing...using the maxtor tools i get error # f40s57 and on startup i have got a check sum error and had to load defaults to get started, and on start up smart says drive status is bad, back up files and replace drive.....time for a new hard drive...this one has lasted for 3-4 years now, the first year i let the machine [an emachine!] run 24/7,only restarting for updates....my question... i want a 60-80 gb hdd,7200 rpm and i want to know if there will be a noticeable difference in preformance with a 8 mb chache as opposed to the standard 2 mb?....also i would like some imput about brands... wd,maxtor, seagate note: the hdd is no longer in the emachine, but in a machine i built.... and thanks again to all the helpful folks here at sysopt!

W.D. & Maxtor

Its strange, Western Digital has the new drives out that have the 8mb cache, but

if you look at the side by side performance with a
Diamand Maxtor only with 2mb cache,

The maxtor is a faster drive in all aspects....

Go figure!

I have 2 maxtor 60gig drives, knock on wood, both have been excellent.

If performance is what you need, you should get an SCSI drive and controller card.

If you don't really need performance, but just wanted a fast IDE drive for the hell of it, buying a 5400RPM drive would be the best bet for longevity and lack of heating problems.
