fatal error message on win xp clean install

I'm new to computer tinkering and trying to understand how to fix a fatal error on my computer.
I had extreme difficulties with Win2K...and ended up clean installing Win XP home instead. I have two (partitioned) drives...my OS is on the smaller of the two and set up as FAT32. The larger drive is also partitioned but set up as NTFS (i don't know if these differences will impact my computers performance?).

Everytime I use my internet connection my computer times me out, restarts and I get a fatal error message. I have fiddled around a bit and managed to shut off the automatic shutdown response when there is an internal error....but the freeze, autostart and fatal errors persist.

Can anyone guide me as to what i should do next?
I've tried searching for an updated driver for my motherboard...but after hours of searching i've found nothing. I've been told that in order to fix the problem i'll have to "flash my bios" -- hell i'm willing to try anything right about now.

As for specifics, I am operating an older computer: PII/300mhz/43GB. The motherboard is a08/05/98 i440LX W977 ATC 6130C 00 (award modular bio v4.51 PG)
The error message I am receiving is:
DRIVER_INQL_NOT_LESS_OR_EQUAL

I'd appreciate any advice.

Thanks.

You left some details out. This is an Internet connection driver issue, right? Who makes the modem and how is it connected to the PC?

I'm willing to bet that it's USB and you have a BIOS that pre-dates 6/98.

There's hope if you switch to an Ethernet modem. I can't guarantee any USB modem. They are all utter nightmares.

I recommend that you update your BIOS at any rate.

Hi Bill,
Thanks for the advice.
I'll talk to my internet provider (re: supply of an ethernet card...but i doubt that's going to happen).

As for updating the BIOS...i went to the site you suggested...noticed it was an FTP site (which I'm not all together familiar with). I downloaded WS_FTP LE and tried to download the files but couldn't connect.

While the question may be pretty basic...can you give me some pointers as to how to get the atc 6130v2 file off the site you suggested?

Thanks.

Man - most of those folders are empty! Forget that.

Your ISP does not have to supply an Ethernet card. They just supply a model. You need to get a card yourself. They only cost about US$15. If they will provide the modem or the one you have now does both USB and Ethernet (10Base-T), you need a cheap card and a patch cable (about $7).

Try updating the drivers for the USB modem first.
