Question

Here's the latest....

After the last shutdown, the system initiated a CHECKDISK utility and it came up with and fixed multiple error on the directory and indexes....

Once it restarted, I reran Orthos to stress for a couple of hours, with no issues... and temps remain low.. (mid to high 40's during stress)

Since then....
1) I ran MEMTEST for a couple of passes.. (I'll run longer when I have time).. but no errors showed up....
2) I ran SEATOOLS against the drives, and they all passed the LONG TEST with no errors.....

So my question is.. could erros on the hard drive, as I mentioned, cause the PC to shutdown abruptly, like with a flick of a switch? If so, then I may be in the clear ?

Almost anything is possible....

BSOD errors are described as-> "Stop errors in a nutshell are errors that are serious enough to cause Windows to stop."

So in theory - a bad spot on a drive that Windows is trying to access can cause a melt down..

You can look at the log and see what it says.

Eventviewer, application and under Source look for the latest Winlogon.
Double click it and you can read it.

Try plugging in the computer to a different circuit. Poor Power quality can cause random shut downs.

Replace the power cord.

Good Luck.

thanks for all of the suggestions......

As I mentioned in my prior post.. there were hardrive errors that showed up with the checkdsk.... since those were repaired , the problem has not reocurred.. and it had been occurring almost hourly with moderate/heavy use.....

So .. I think I'm in the clear and chalking this up to the hardrive errors.

I do live in an an older house.. so power fluctuations could come into play.. Any suggestions on a cheap power filter/strip for protection?

Thanks

Mike

you guys are no fun

if I use a UPS, then my equipment will last forever.. and I'd still be running a Pentium II processor !!!

I order a couple of units from APC... after reading some reviews, etc...

These should do the trick .. thanks for all the good advise .. much appreciated...
