Cannot access internet

Last Tuesday, I was preparing my laptop for an out of town trip. My current virus protection (Norton 360) had expired, and rather than renew it, I downloaded and installed AVG Anti-Virus Free. Everything worked without any problems.

On Thursday, I leave and when I reach my destination, I set up the laptop and booted it up. I could not access the internet at all. Every web page I attempted to access in Firefox gave me the message that Firefox could not access the server. I tried Internet Explorer and got the message that the webpage could not be displayed.

My network tells me I am connected. I show up on the network map on the desktop from which I am typing this. But I cannot access the web or download my email.

I uninstalled Norton 360, although I am not sure it completely uninstalled as Vista appears to think it still is there. I uninstalled AVG. I still could not access the web. I have purchased, installed and run System Suite 10 and it did not solve the problem.

It does not matter if I connect with an ethernet cable or wirelessly. I still have the same problem.

When I get home, I can always backup my data, restore my laptop to its new condition and reinstall everything, but I'd rather find another solution to the problem if I can.

The laptop is a Toshiba Satellite P305D
AMD Tuurioon X2 Dual Core Mobile RM-70 2.00 GHz
4.00 GB RAM
Vista Home Premium 64 bit SP1 (I am sure I downloaded and installed SP2 at some time in the past, but it appears not to be there after all, along with a few other programs which are supposed to be there.)

I've run hijackthis and can upload a log if necessary.

Any suggestions?

Thanks.

Thanks.

Maybe the problem is due to faulty winsock catalog after uninstalling Norton, try to reset Winsock catalog and see whether it helps.

Thank you for your reply. I downloaded and ran the Norton Removal Tool and that solved the problem.
