Dial-up 56K modem connects fine in W98, but not in XP. Installed modem (56K Conexant Riptide) on Xp with generic driver for winXp, Shows up in Control Panel/ Device Manager with no conflicts/Configured to right port/Device manager says device is working, but when I attempt to dial, I don't get a dial tone.
Any ideas anyone?

Thanks, Been there, Done that. Doesn't work. Installed proper generic modem driver for my modem, but still doesn't work. If I unistall modem and let windows pick it after restart, Win 98 detects it on Com2. Win Xp will detect it on Com3 why is this and is this why my modem isn't working on XP?

QUERY your modem.
If there is a problem with the drivers this will tell you.
Is the driver WHQL CERT?
Is there a 2000 PRO WHQL CERT driver about? If so try that.
Is the modem USB or RS?

It's an internat pci HCF Conexant Modem. I downloaded the generic driver for WinXP from their website and installed them. I can query my modem no problem, I get a reply, evreything seems to be installed correctly, but when I try to connect to the internet, the dial up connection windows shoes that its dialing, but I hear no click from the modem and no dial tone, and eventually it will say that it could not establish a connection. Any more ideas?

Is the driver you downloaded WHQL CERT?
I would try and get a WIN2000 PRO WHQL CERT driver for the modem, most WIN2K drivers work with XP.
So on that note find a WIN2K WHQL driver and try that.
That's all I can say for now.

Salvo,
i have a question for you, if the modem works in win98 would that not mean that he has plugged it into the phone line??
Just a thought.
