I understand this is a common problem when closing Windows 98, but a first for me. When closing down the computer through the normal process from the Start Icon, the closing proceeds normally until the final Window now shutting down. It apparently hangs in this location and when re-booting the computer goes through the usual process of diskscan etc. Thanks -- OLDTIMER

If I remember reading the support file at Microsoft this has to do with the computer shutting down before it has the time to write to the hard disk. See this article "Q238096" at Microsofts site Then run windows update and let it build the catalog. Then go down the list until you see the IDE support file and check it

Do you have any cards installed in your PCI slots? I have a network card in one of my slots and it causes my PC to hang and even restart. You might want to check about updating drivers for any of your products in your PC. Also, check on the Microsoft site about problems shutting down. I use to have the link for a good troubleshooting page about this topic, but I deleted it.

You might also try the startup shutdown troubleshooting in your windows help file. Click on start/help, then type troubleshooting in the box. Click on startup in the drop down and windows will help you try. One of my PCs required removal of ACPI - it was a dFI motherboard but it just hung at the "Windows is shutting down screen". Biglaker

A corrupted sound file for the closing sound will cause a hang also. Go into sounds in control panel and turn off close sound. See if that stops it.
Norton also can cause a hang on shut down. Turn it off before you shut down and see if it stops the hang up.

I have seen this problem on several different computers of different makes and models, all using Win98SE. A long time ago I looked in the Microsoft knowledgebase and found a downloadable file that when installed corrects the problem. I keep it on a diskette for the next time.
I just tried to find it again at MS but I'm getting a message that their search engine is not working at this time. Are we all really buying our OS software from a company that can't keep it's own systems running?
Anyway try using a search query like "Windows 98 shut down problems" the next time the service is running.

1 there is a fix on windowsupdate.microsoft.com
2 turn PNP OS disable in your BIOS "that was my case"
fixed : )
There is indeed a patch available and still current for Windows 98
SE, on the Windows update site. Try the patch first, then as suggested check the closing sound file, could be corrupt. I don't
use the sound file anyway and my atx system just shut's itself down. I had Norton's 2001 AV on my system. It did not prevent
shutdown, but aggraviated the fire out me at shutdown because
the Norton's kept thinking it was a virus. I think it's suppose to work that way. Hope this will help. 1966

the patch for windows 98 that worked for me is called "mapped drives shutdown patch". you should also disable "fast shutdown" using a program called MSCONFIG. I dont' remember for sure where the option is located, however; disabling this allows windows to actually unload drivers from memory, which can help prevent them from hanging up the system

So will have somethingto work on plus all of the contributions from the others and thanks for their help. Have not been in any hurry because the machine still running fine - I just dont like things when they refuse to operate properly.. Thanks "OLDTIMER":)
