I need a burner for Christmas and can't make up my mind. It's between the Plextor 12X and Yamaha 16X. They both are burn proof. I read the reviews on Plextor and like it alot. But I haven't seen a single review on Yamaha yet. No specs or anything. It's the first Yamaha drive I've seen. Software doesn't matter, I already have nero and cd clone. Plextor is $190 and Yamaha is $235. I will be burning alot of movies and mp3 once I get it. It will definitely be put to use. So which one? And should I wait a little for prices to come down more? When will Plextor get a 16X, not that I want it, but the 12X will drop in price then.

Sounds like both do what you need, so go with the cheaper one.

Plextor's reliability has never been in question. I cannot say the same for Yamaha because of lack of information. Judging from Jaida, it seems pretty good.
The question is, does the extra $45 justify the 4x speed advantage?
Personally, I'd get the Plextor because I have enough patience to wait.
On the other hand, $45 isn't that much http://sysopt.earthweb.com/forum/smile.gif

We have several Yamaha burners here at work and they are very reliable (I can't speak for the software, but the burners themselves have no problems).

I just checked the link above and it turns out that Yamaha doesn't have the burn proof. That's why the huge buffer. I'll get the plextor cause I multitask so much.
