PC drags

When i play a movie either from my hard drive or cdrom it drags. the sound gets distorted and the video slows down there aren't any other programs running except what is in the start up and even then there are only 4 items. This happens intermitent. Please help

I'm running windows Me
wd 40gb hd
radeon 7000 agp
hp cd-rw 8x
chaintech mobo
512mb pc133 ram

You didn't specify what is your soundcard, but I'd advice you to check if any newer drivers are available both for your soundcard and your videocard.
Also, if you're talking about DiVX/Mpeg4 movies, update to latest codec (v4.12 I think), available at www.divx.com
And be sure you're using latest DirectX 8.1

You might also want to play with your hardware acceleration settings and the cdrom's read ahead setting.I had a similar problem and by playing with the setting I got rid of it.
I don't have ME I have 98se so I don't know if there is a setting screen for acceleration settings.

i will try and update all software and see if it has any effect if not i will try and mess with the settings.
oh yeah i'm using onboard audio think i should change and get a pci sound card?

PCI sound is much better - we picked up a PCI card for £7.50 the other day, and the sound has improved immensely !
