Recently my motherboard died so I had it replaced. When I got my PC back from the retailer everything worke fine except the 400 Mhz CPU was running at 280 Mhz I took it back and they said that this new motherboard was dying and they replaced it. I got the new computer back and it ran at 400 Mhz but the CD-ROM drive was missing from the My Computer area. I took it back once again and the retailer told me that I had to pay for a replacement CD-ROM drive and told me that it died in the first motherboard. I don't think this can be right since it worked in the second faulty motherboard that ran the CPU at 280 Mhz. Are these guys trying to rip me off or is what they say happened even possible.

Thanks in advance

I'll make an educated guess here; it was a celeron 400a on a ASUS P2B-B. The reason is was posting 280 was because the celeron runs at 6*66 and that mobo only has multipliers up to 5.5. As the celeron tried to default back to the default multiplier (6), it wasn't available, it runs on a multiplier of 4.242424..... (I don't know why, so please don't ask.)

As for the CD-Rom, I say the buggers just installed it wrong, or didn't hook it up at all intentionally in order to squeeze more cash out of you.

As long as you didn't pay for it, then it's ok, but if you did, get them to give you the faulty parts back & get a second opinion elsewhere. If it turns out that they were tell the truth (which I severly doubt), fair enough, but if they weren't, call up your local branch of the BBB.

Sorry if I sound a little cynical or pessimistic, but I've been through SO much **** with computer stores, that I find it hard to believe that an honest one exists. If they do, then certainly not in my province. But who cares? I get my stuff straight from resalers now anyway. http://www.sysopt.com/forum/smile.gif

Same here, remarked CPUs, a dying ABIT BH6 (replaced), an "8gh" hard drive that only showed up as 4gb, they gave me a replecement saying it must have been an accident. A faulty power switch! And about 2 years back they said that DVD was entirely necasary, I fell for it and have bought 2 DVD movies since (for a total of 2). On even tried to sell my a CPU clearly marked 333mhz as a P2 500, I am sure it ran that fast (remarked), but Intel never even came out with such a CPU! Buying online is about as good, except you cannot come in screemeing about how they sold you an illigal part and ripped you off in frount of all the now leaving coustomers!
