My cursor/mouse control is totally gone at times. The cursor jumps around erratically when I try to move it justr a bit, sometimes it just won't move at all, sometimes it will just crawl for a moment and then jump for no reason.

I have a new Compaq Presario 7478 with 184 MB RAM and a 533MHz processor.

I have a Logitech MarbleTrak (?) w/ latest drivers.

This seems to happen most often when on line - and I have a 3Com DSL modem at 512k.

Any ideas will be greatly appreciated. I re-boot often in order to rectify it, but that's a pain.

Thanx.

I had a mouse with that problem for a while, it would work fine one direction, but after being in use for a while it would stop working the other (i've forgotten which was working, but it doesn't matter) I took it apart and found that the optical sensor for the direction that wasn't working wasn't aimed properly at the little wheel. Bent it over a bit so it was aimed right and no problems since.
(in case you didn't know many mice work like so: you move the mouse, which turns the ball, the ball rotates two shafts (one for left/right, one for up/down) at the end of each shaft is something that looks like a gear this is "seen" by a small optical sensor aimed at it, which sends the signal to the cable. you might know that already but thought I'd put it in case you didn't)

Hope this works

Oh! There should be a readme.txt in your logitech folder that might have an answer as well.

Cheers!

I have the same problem with my Microsoft Intellie Mouse Explorer. I have no idea what the hell is going on with it. But i will all of a sudden either loose total mouse support, or it will go haywire around the screen click this and that. sometimes it locks my keyboard also. Reboots don't fix it either. I either have to turn all the power off. Or go in and out of my bios. Any ideas to that??

I had a simular problem with an old 266 in that the modem and the mouse were sharing the same IRQ and it would freeze or be very jerky at times while online. Sometimes it would lock the computer up totally. check to see if they are sharing the same IRQ and if so, assign a free IRQ to the mouse if one is available. Just a thought.. MP

Thanks for the ideas. I've checked IRQ's and no conflicts there.
I've uninstalled and reinstalled. I've added newest drivers.
I cleaned the track ball and the "optical window" and the rollers.
It seems like, the more apps or windows I have open, the quicker this happens.
Is there some way to raise the importance level of the mouse (grasping at straws here).

Thanx for the help.

It may be necessary to do a registry clean-up. Remove the following
folders in the Windows 9x Registry.
Do a backup of your registry before you begin!

Select the "Start" button, then "Run". In the "Open" line type "regedit",
and click on the OK button.
Open the following Registry folders:

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\System\CurrentControlSet\Servic es\Class\Mouse\xxxx

Remove all of the 0000, 0001, 0002, etc. under the Mouse folder until
there are no folders remaining under the Mouse folder.
Now shutdown your system and restart.

Cheers!
