The power supply unit fried. I installed a new one but the computer doesn't boot. It makes a siren like sound. The motherboard is a Chaintech 6BTM and the CPU is a P2 400Mhz. Any suggestions?

That siren sound is a BIOS beep code error. I wouldn't turn that machine on until I went to the web site of the maker of my mobo or computer and looked up BIOS beep code errors. It sounds serious, but it may not be. You said your PSU "fried" is shouldn't do that unless there was some other serious malfunction. It most likely is one of three things, bad mobo, CPU or video card as those are the things that draw the most juice. Good Luck. and don't put too much effort into a dying ember.

If it's like a fast ringing, contant beeping.
And also if it's a award BIOS, which I think your BIOS is, this means that there is a memory or video problem example seated correctly etc.
1 long continous beep means a memory problem, usually this is conected to the first bank of memory, not seated correctly etc.
Again this is for the AWARD BIOS.
If you don't have AWARD these sugestions might not be correct.
Find out what your BIOS is, and then we might be able to give you a better answer.

hmmm If that was the orginal psu from that PII 400 it certainly got some mileage. The psu could have failed just cause it was old. hehehehe i remember when my brothers psu went out. Right after he pushed the power button there was a white flash that came through the cracks of the bay slots. Thank god nothing happened to the system. Just replaced the PSU and everything was fine.

Turn your system on briefly if you forgotten the codes. Then take it from there......Hopefully everything is okay, but sometimes the PSU doesnt like to go out by itself......

Good luck.....
