i recently (this week) upgraded my old clunker with a pcChips m810lmr mobo and a 800 duron cpu. 256 megs of sdram. new WD 40 gig hard drive. adaptec 8x4x32 cd burner. problem #1 is no sound!...problem #2 is new ps/2 mouse wont work....problem #3 is cd rom will stop reading when installing a new program from a cd...message reads something like, "the cd may need cleaning"......here's what i've done so far:
sound problem
made sure mobo was set up for onboard audio....no help..:(
made sure o/s (win98) was set up for new hdwre...no help..:(
checked for any conflicts; irq's, etc....no help..:(
no sound from case speaker or from stereo speakers..(labtec)
incidently...sound was working before i upgraded..

mouse problem...serial mouse works fine...new ps/2 mouse doesnt....

cd rom problem......when it quits reading and i get error message...i have to reboot for it to work properly....this problem is intermittent...sometimes, it works great......btw, no audio from here either...:(

hope you folks can help......i'm running out of patience...dont wanna call the "techies" at my local 'puter store......they know less than me, anyway.......;)

Welcome to SysOpt!

You're supposed to reinstall Windows when you do a major upgrade. There's too many differing hardware components and driver conflicts.

Fire up REGEDIT.EXE and navigate to HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE, find and delete the ENUM key. Do the same in HKEY_CURRENT_USER. Don't worry if you can't find two.

Restart. Everything will be redetected. If you still have problems, reinstall Windows over this installation from a Startup disk in DOS.

If it still fails, you must format and reinstall from scratch.
