I recently built a computer with the following:

K7S5A MB
AthlonXP 1600 CPU
GF3 Ti-200 Graphics Card
256 MB Kingston RAM DDR PC-2100
Ethernet Card (generic)

I installed Win XP Home addition, and the system hangs on boot up and shut down intermittently. Sometimes it hangs, sometimes it boots, with no real pattern. I have a Microtech CAMERAMATE USB CardReader attached. Any ideas why the system hangs sometimes on boot up and shut down?

THANKS!

Chris

These are just some suggestions to try.
Are all drivers installed, loaded, and the correct version (WinXP)?
Have you run the Windows Updates? Try removing the USB card reader and booting. Are the Bios settings correct? Is this machine currently connected to the Internet or networked?

Are you using a creative sound card by any chance? If so, it is most certainly a known driver issue...perhaps a DEVDRIVER file problem. Happened to me

do you need that GENERIC ethernet card
xp is fussy about it's hardware and it version of the drivers
can you try it without it ---- i've seem some noname ( software type ) ones from a cable ISP ---- i guess IF they work okay but you would think the kind of deals a cable company could get in bulk ???

i'm just looking at the manual - is the ethernet a card or is it built into the motherboard ???

did you do all the mb drivers - there would have been about 6

you MIGHT want to do the bios ---- be very careful or you'll toast the board
