Ok, I just ordered a GlobalWIN WBK38 to replace my MTS Glaciator II due to AMD compatibility issues (see my Faulty Processor post). Now the heatsink has just arrived, and I've taken a look at it. It has a pink "thermal pad" on the bottom of it. Do I need to apply any Artic silver ontop of this thing? Or do I remove it? Also, whats the best way of getting old Artic Silver off my CPU core and off the old heatsink? Thanks for your help! WMFMS/

Hello WMFMS!
I would take off the pink thermal pad on the heatsink, and apply some Arctic Silver to it. The thermal pads that come on the heatsinks only work 10-15% better than nothing at all.
Try scraping it off with your fingernail, if that doesn't work try using something harder(just make sure you get all of it off:) )
Then, put some arctic silver on there and you should be ready to go!
As for getting arctic silver off the CPU core and heatsink, try using a paper towel or a moderately stiff brush to sweep it off(I've never tried getting the silver stuff off with it, but it worked with thermal grease:) )
Hope that helps!
David

I have used acetone to clean my AMD cpu's but I'm not sure about using it on a Pentium cpu!

Easiest ways for removing the thermal pad. Plastic pen cap, so as to not scratch the heat sink. Then contact cleaner, this finishes cleaning the pink residue up. And then alcohol to clean off the contact cleaner. Use a cotton ball.
As for the Arctic Silver on the cpu, contact cleaner works great for this. I use the cleaner that comes in a can. Then spray the top of the cpu till all the Arctic Silver is removed. And final cleanup with alcohol. Before reinstalling the cpu onto the mobo, be sure that the cpu and heat sink are completely dry. All this may sound time consuming. But it only takes 5 minutes.

Ill have to say this.
I got sick and tired of my Alpha fan + heatsink combo(28.00 with copper in-lay VERY loud!! and I really didnt need the so called XTRA cooling power.
I bought an 8 dollar heatsink with fan and guess what?
My temperatures went down about 8 degrees F, and its quieter too. I say aluminum will work better over copper anyday. Thats why high performance automotive radiators are aluminum ,NOT copper
I was also using Arctic silver ll on that Alpha POS. I am using the thermal pad now, and its working MUCH better than the so called high performance fan.

T-Bird-I hope your point is the fan was at fault not the thermal compound.I know if you took that same one with the thermal pad and put Artic Silver 3 on it-it would drop the temps big time. You have to use the same heatsink, cpu and fan to compare thermal solutions along with idle temp. and full cpu load sustained for awhile to get right temp. comparison.
Themal pads use parifin wax while Artic uses silver particles.Silver conducts heat way better than any wax!A thermal pad is only 10% better than just slapping the hsf unit on with notheing! The tests I saw showed that a AMD duron 800's full load temp. with AS3 = the idle temp. of the thermal pad on the same hsf and cpu.Now that is a huge dif. in the world of overclocking and even a marginal dif. to the avg. user. Its worth the time for anyone to rip that thermal pad junk off and go with the AS3.
Right at this moment I'm running a P4 1.5 williamette with the thermal pad.My AS3 just arrived today.Hehe! So I'm going to setup a test bed.I will write down my idle temp. after fresh boot and sitting ten minutes. Then I will run BCM diagnostics stress test consecutive for 10 times. Then I will run 3d-mark 2001se for ten times and take the full load test.At that point I am going to change to o'clock settings and do the same! Then its time to change to AS3 =run for 48hours and test again.I will post the results and test bed in a new thread titled "pad vs. Artic silver3".Watch for it if you want a comparison.I myself want to see if the reviews were right or just way over rated. We'll see.:D

Make sure that the thermal paste is applied paper thin. Too much excess is just as bad as not enough. The purpose is to fill in the pits and imperfections of the h/s surface so that there is a consistent contact with the processor chip.

"T-bird"...
I thought that they used aluminum because it was cheaper
ohh well...do you have your old $28 H/S, I 'd love to get it from you:D

The best way i have found to remove the old paste without scratching the heatsink is to use a credit card to remove the majority of the paste. Then using some alcohol and a paper towel to remove the rest. After that using a soft scrubbing pad and buff that surface up to a nice brand new shine.......:D

A friend of mine bought one of these new all copper fan with the heat duct tubing running through it, this thing weighs about three pounds !! NO JOKE !!! It's scary how heavy this thing is. Make me wonder how strong the connection of the chip seat is to the mobo. LIKE BREAKING LOOSE !!! NO thanks, I'll keep my aluminum one.

Just letting you know, I tried the new GlobalWin WBK38, it sucked. With the Glaciator II I was getting temps of around 60c, with the WBK38 it went up to 72c!! And it was louder! The copper heatsink works much better (it's heavy tho). Anyway I spoke to AMD tech support team once again, they went through all the standard questioning procedure and they can't work out what is wrong. System temp is normal, Vcore is normal, heatsink is AMD recommended, mobo is AMD recommended... So they think the CPU is faulty. Now if only I could get through to the Dabs.com support team, they might send me a new one! Their office must be seriously understaffed, I'm always number 20-25 in the queue, and I'm sick of waiting 1hr+ only to get disconnected!! Anybody else ever had to return components to Dabs? Will I ever get a new CPU?!?! Thanks for your help with this matter.
