These are good times! I just bought a 256MB DIMM of PC100 for $129. It seems that Fry's Electronics was clearing out this now outdated technology as a kind of "lost-leader" advertising.

The DIMM is now happily singing along in my old classic Athlon/FIC SD11 system, now with a total of 384MB.

How much would 256MB have cost 4-5 years ago? http://sysopt.earthweb.com/forum/smile.gif

You got that right, Meestor Cookie Munster http://sysopt.earthweb.com/forum/smile.gif

RAM is at an all time low, think it might be because of impending release of the NEW DDR or QDR RAM ??

In addition to your steal, NAME Brand Kingston or PNY is cheap too-->>

32mb= $22.95
64mb= $33.95
128= $67.95

HEY, what happened to all the CHEAP HD's we saw in the summer ??

It was common to get 10-20gb ATA 66/100's for 80-90 bucks both 5400 and 7200rpm..

GONE GONE,,, BYE BYE

Now is definitely the time to boost your RAM. I just paid $149 for two 128MB sticks. I saw them cheaper from another vendor, but I went with the vendor I trust. It's worth the few extra bucks. There's nothing like having 384MB in your system. Except maybe 512? Hmmm.

Hi,
I need not worry about purchasing anymore memory as i currently have 640M with 128m sitting in a box waiting for the next system that i build.

Uhmmmmm, actually I paid about $300 for a 256MB Memory module just about 6 months ago. http://sysopt.earthweb.com/forum/frown.gif Just got another stick about a week ago for $160 for the same exact one. Now I have 1GB memory. http://sysopt.earthweb.com/forum/smile.gif

Tell me about it.

I remember 3 years ago... I paid $50 per 16MB 72-pin SIMMS. Bought 2 of them. A month later, 16MB was $25 each. Bought 2 more. $150 for 64MB of RAM.

I think now's the time for me to upgrade my board.

Hey NDC how long does it take to do a memory Test? It must be Like 20 Seconds or sumthing!

I had doubts as to whether or not going from 128MB to 384MB would make any difference - it made a fair difference in Win98 but Linux really seems to like the extra breathing room. I like Gimp - Did I mention I like Gimp? www.gimp.org (http://www.gimp.org)

And since a few have done the "megaRAM boast," I'd just like to make a modest boast as well (out of glee, http://sysopt.earthweb.com/forum/wink.gif -not pride) - there are 2 T-birds, 1 Duron, and one classic Athlon running in this house with a total of 1GB of memory -- and the lowly Celeron2 w/128MB is hidden away at my work site ...

Is my 7-year old daughter lucky to have the ??Duron 650 /A7V/128MB/TNT/SB Value/6GB/17" (her monitor sides and mouse are covered with Sailor Moon stickers)?? And.. YES she dual boots W98 and Linux (she loves Linux games)

BTW - did you know that "Raptor" comes for Linux now? Hey it's a start... I bought the full version for $13 - only need 2.0 kernel and upgrade to latest SDL libs... Works almost as good on my Athlon 800 as it did on my 486...

By this time next year a 1Gz T-bird should be about $150 ...heck, if we keep waiting they may pay us to take them..

It just keeps getting better..

and Larry wonders why I don't buy a Mac...

You know... your topic of "new technology" and "waiting" reminds me of something I heard a month or so ago regarding a new type of internet connection.

The company (which hasn't yet released it's IPO) by the name of Occom is a new start-up. The two people that are the founders are a husband-and-wife team that has spent many years at Cisco Systems in their high-speed internet section (mostly working on DSL-type technology, routers, etc.). Most recently, they were heading up the High-Speed Internet department there until they "retired" to start up Occom.

They have this new type of internet connection (I'm not too sure on the specifics) that is MUCH faster than cable or DSL, and much cheaper (in actual cost) than either of them. Like I said, I'm not too sure on the specifics, but if I hear any more, I'll let you all know.

So just remember that name: "Occom" and look out for their new technology/technologies.

BTW, I'm gonna start a thread on this in Networking, so post there regarding it. (EDIT- the thread is located here (http://sysopt.earthweb.com/forum/Forum6/HTML/001679.html) .)

Hey NDC how long does it take to do a memory Test? It must be Like 20 Seconds or sumthing! I

t would on most mainboards, but it takes less than 2 seconds to do a memory check on system startup on my Tyan S1832-DL Dual CPU Board. http://sysopt.earthweb.com/forum/smile.gif
