Hey all, I have a Gateway pc with a 366 Celeron and a Tabor II motherboard. Does anyone know where the adjustment for the processor and bus speeds are on these? I switched the jumper on the system board to config mode and got into the bios ('s where its supposed to be...), but there is no provision for changing the speeds. Do I need to upgrade the bios to a user-definable type or am i going about this all wrong? Thanx for any replies :)
ps- I know Gateway has various BIOS updates in the tech section of their site for different processor upgrades, but they're supposedly processor-specific (ie-preset speed settings)...?

Welcome to SysOpt!
Systems from Gateway, Compaq, and HP use proprietary motherboards. Most of these systems have fixed settings that cannot be changed. If you want to get into overclocking, the best thing to do is buy each component of your system separately.

Hi again - Supposedly (as per gateway), I can upgrade my processor up to a 700MHz PIII while keeping the same motherboard and most drivers. The problem is, they won't tell me how to change the settings until I actually buy one of their upgrades. Does the motherboard self-detect the processor and automatically set the speed? I do intend to eventually rebuild the system with a new main board and possibly dual processors, but it's still under warranty for another year so I was hoping to get the most out of it for now. Thanx again for any replies :)

Well they wont tell you for sure coz they want you to pay them and buy a 700mhz from them, so like try this call them up and say you just got a new 700mhz (or any Mhz you lke) cpu what setting i most use to make the system see 700mhz (or any Mhz you lke)? or some thing like that or Options #2 call them back in hour make sure not same person on the phone and tell him/her some one give you a broken Hp system and the Cpu works great and you want to use it in yours, what setting i most use?, But like Jimstep say the best way if you want to OC is to get a home grown system and Yes any home grown Pc is 80% better then any IBM,HP,SoNY,GateWay coz with them you pay for there name that they got from owner that buy a Pc first time.

Hey again all. Yeah, I called Gateway the other day & told them i was definitely interested in getting an upgrade from them, but I know my BIOS isn't user-definable so I would need to know how to set the clock speeds for the new processor. The sales chick had no idea, so she connected me with tech and they had no idea. Think I should just scrounge up a PII or II somewhere & plug it in just to see what it does? By the way- I was reading through someof the older posts the other day & was wondering if anybody ever found a way around the multiplier locks? Thanx :)
