Hello everyone, I've got a very strange problem. I've been using a standard usdrives 48x Atapi cd-rom drive with a Philips CDD 3610 burner for years while running win98SE. Never had any problems, everything ran fine. Some time ago I upgraded to a new system with winxp professional(specs are on the bottom of this message) with a Soltek SL-75DRV4 (KT266A, via north/southbridge). I put my old drives in the new system, and they're running fine (had a little problem with both drives using PIO mode but changed it to DMA and they run fine). Then I tried to install FireBurner. It hangs at the startup (eg, when it's detecting cd's in the drives). Then I tried Nero. Same thing, ran fine but hung when trying to scan SCSI/IDE bus. CloneCD, exactly the same error. Hangs when it tries to detect the cd's. I read a lot on the matter on several websites. First I installed the adaptec ASPI layer (4.70). No problems so far, but the same things happened. Then I installed the newest Via 4in1 drivers (with IDE bus master). No luck that way. I also tried to disable the bus master in the hardware settings (the Nero help files said that could be a solution)but Windows detects it again. Please help me, I wouldn't know any other cause for the problem. The system is brand new, clean install, so that can't be the problem. Thanks for any suggestions!!

Specs:
AMD AthlonXP 2000+
Soltek SL-75DRV4
512 MB DDR-SDRam
81.9 GB Maxtor HDD (7200 RPM)
nVidia GeForce 2 MX-400
Soundblaster Audigy Retail
UsDrives 48x Atapi CD-Drive.
Philips CDD-3610 Burner.

and some other stuff which can't possibly related to the problem (how can a PCI LAN card conflict with a cd-drive ;))

Questions: First, are your cd drives XP compatible? Check the HCL. Secondly, how are your drives configured? CD drives on the same channel? That doesn't seem to work well (for me anyways) on XP Pro. With my burner as Master on IDE2 and my DVD as slave on IDE1, both drives are detected properly on startup. Both Nero and Xps burning feature work well.

Same prob here with XP, my HP 8210 and software Roxio/Adaptec 3 EasyCD and Ahead Nero were not compatible.

Had to patch for the CDRW, and update the other tow software, Works fine now, but takes twice as long to burn in XP.

Since both drives work fine, I'm sure they're XP compatible. Besides, as long as they're 100% compatible with IDE/ATAPI they should work fine anyway. I have a feeling this is a software problem, since they work fine (games/movies etc. all play fine. Only thing: cd-drive uses Ultra DMA Mode 2 - which is UDMA33 - while the burner uses Multi Word DMA 2 - which is even lower then UDMA33 -. Can't there be a possibility that they're incompatible in Win XP?). I don't want to put them on a different IDE channel, since my HD runs in UDMA 100 and putting the CD-Drive on Primary Slave/Master would force my HD to run at UDMA 33, which is very slow. Still, I'd like any suggestion, no matter how weird it may sound.......

There is a cd burner update for the win XP OS. Run Windows Updates and have a look.

Read this, it may help

Since I changed from PIO to DMA mode some time ago I tried to set it back to PIO again. Guess what?? Everything works fine again. But why can't Windows XP use my drives in DMA mode??? It's faster and more advanced, and the drives ran fine using DMA on win98 SE. Any help appreciated :p

Guess what? I finally found out what the problem was. Seems like my burner can only run in PIO mode, and win xp let both drives run in PIO. Then I made them use DMA (both), which caused problems due to the inconsistent hardware settings. Now I've configured them separate. Well, there's one sunny side to it, at least I've got the newest ASPI layer now :D Thanks for the support everyone!
