 Looking for a P4 motherboard. Going to build my own. I see some have 400 bus others have 200 bus. each one is a little different from the others. What would be a good one. any ideals out there ??

If you have the name and model of one please put it down. Thanks Joe

Depends on whether you want to use SDRAM, DDR SDRAM or RDRAM.

Stay away from ordinary SDRAM. It will choke the P4.

RDRAM and the i850 chipset does very well in benchmarks, but RDRAM is expensive.

That leaves a motherboard that supports the P4 and DDR SDRAM. I believe MSI makes a good one, but can't remember what model no. it is right now. Abit and Asus, if they make a motherboard with the aforementioned specs, would be good bets too although somewhat more expensive than the MSI.

Cheers.

You're welcome.

Hop on over to www.tomshardware.com and look for motherboard comparisons for the P4. I know he did some but I don't have the link handy.

Just received an Asus P4B-266-C mobo ($117 + $5 Fedex Saver) from www.newegg.com ;(No on-board lan or audio)
It takes DDR RAM,(get PC2100 @266 MHz), which is still less costly than RDRAM. Only two memory slots, however.
I'm still budget-conscious, so I also ordered the retail boxed P4
1.6A w/ 512K L2 cache,(478-pin) for $148 + $6.95 Fedex. If my info is correct, this is the new 0.13 micron core. The retail box gets you the processor, heatsink and fan, and Intel 3-year warranty.
I understand this chip overclocks very well,so I should be able to
get 2.0 GHz out of it fairly easily, if what I read is correct.

These CPUs are power and heat intensive (50-60 watts),so make certain you have at least a 300 watt P4 ready power supply. (I've
seen Dell use 250 watt power supplies on these processors - I'm
skeptical and a little shocked at this - I guess they don't expect
people to add any devices to their systems down the road).

That's my two-cents - hope it helps.

I love the 2 cents. I'm learning some on each one. I'm looking at one of those $15.00 350w cases being sold on ebay. $35 total with shipping. I've been checking out sites trying to find good deals. I notice I can get the cpus on ebay for about $20 to $40 less. The motherboard I'm haveing a hard time fuguring it out. Thinking of the intell 850MV . found it on one site for about $150 Little more then I wanted to spend but figure it will match up perfect with an intell p4 cpu. Which I have my eye on a few of them on Ebay. Is there a big differents between the 1.6 Ghz and like the 1.8 GHz. I mean can you notice the differents ?? I have a 533 celeron. that will go to the kids when I get this new one done. so a .5 to a 1.8 is the differents in the speed to load games ect...? thanks for the 2 cents Joe

That's my two-cents - hope it helps.
