I would, but I don't think it will help. If a game/connection took the time to compress data, it would slow the transmission, right? For that reason, compression won't help gaming - only downloads.

You go to the Properties for your modem (in Control Panel) and then the Connection tab. Click on Advanced in the lower right and then simply select "Compress data" on the left.

It depends on whether you have a Winmodem or not. Winmodems do not support hardware compression because they are not hardware modems. Here's an excerpt:
Enable modem compression. Data compression provides faster uploads/downloads depending on the data which is getting compressed. Should you have a Winmodem then you can leave this setting Unticked as these Modems do not support hardware compression. For regular, hardware, modems Tick this setting to enable the Modem to perform any data compression, which provides lower CPU usage over using software compression. As a result I’d recommend Ticking this setting for best system performance

It's getting to the point where it's nearly impossible to tell if a modem is hardware or software. The only way to be certain is to use an external serial modem. You don't specify your country. I will assume that it's the UK:

Serial modems have many advantages. Once you have one, you won't go back...trust me. I would recommend the USR Courier V.Everything, but it costs about £200.00!

OK, I own a Diamond SupraExpress 56ePRO. It's not a Winmodem, and it uses harware flow control. It works freat both on Win2K and Red Hat 6.2, but never uses compression, tough the option is selected...

but never uses compression, Actually, it does - but the process is virtually invisible. Compression is used mainly on downloads and images.
