Is it okay to share the same IDE channel (Master, Slave) with a UDMA/66 cable for a 7200rpm hard drive and a new IDE CD-RW? I didn't see anything regarding this issue on my new CD-RW's install guide, so I'm only guessing here. I'd like to get a response or two before I go ahead and connect them. The HD is a Western Digital 20 gig, and the burner is a new Plextor 32x8x4. Was going to go with SCSI, but it's just a tad too expensive for me.

Sith,
Make sure the cd-rw is the master.

Nothing wrong at all. But if that's the hard drive you're going to be booting from, I'd suggest you make it the master and not the CD-RW.

I've wondered the same question but does that also mean if the Plextor is UDMA 33 the HDD will only run at 33?

Thanks for the feedback! It's configured as my Secondary Master (I've got three hard drives). Burned five CD's with absolutely no problems (knock knock on my desk).

Another tip that is offered by Sony Hot Burn is that if you are burning from hard drive to CD, is to defrag your system previous to your burning session.

You should try not to have the writer share a controller with a hard drive because these two devices have vastly different speeds and the performance of your hard drive would be affected. Instead, have the writer share a controller with another CD_ROM or DVD drive.
Did you install CD-Writer as the master device on the primary IDE Controller?
If you have a SCSI hard disk as your boot device, the master device
on the computer's primary IDE controller may be available, and so it's
possible to configure your CD-Writer as the primary master device.
I strongly discourage this. Make CD-Writer the slave device on the
primary controller instead. As the master device, some computers will
view the drive as the primary boot device and your SCSI boot sequence
may fail. Other computers might try to load MS-DOS compatibility mode
drivers (in Windows 95 and Windows 98) for IDE devices which are set by
CMOS to automatically configure.
If you must configure your CD-Writer as the Master device on the
primary controller, set the primary master device type to CDROM (rather
than AUTO-CONFIGURE) in your computer's CMOS settings.
Hope this helps out a bit.
Cheers!
If you are running a Compaq you should return the hardware configuration back to the original settings before using Compaq's, Quick Restore disk's.
