I have Win98 SE installed on my pc and i am having nothing but problems, fatal exception errors, such as "rundll32 - coused a general protection fault in module user.exe at 0004:0000le66" "illegell opperation" etc... My spec is at www.overclockit.ic24.net/myspec.htm (http://www.overclockit.ic24.net/myspec.htm)
I now have 196mb ram (1x64 & 1x128) both sdram dimms and both 100mhz. One branded one not. the problem has got worse since the extra ram, but i have been doing more things with the pc since aswell.
Any ideas whats the problem?? Will Win98 be more stable than Win98 se ??
Thanx in advance
RobUK
I had the same problem a while ago, pulled my IBM memory and put in a new Crucial memory.... all probs disapeared.

What programs are you running when the errors occur?

I'm running Office 2000 (especially word, crashes a lot) i.e 5, yahoo messenger, Outlook express. They all couse fatal exception errors and when i come to shut down Win98 SE after an hour or so it refuses to shut down and hangs, thought it was a heat problem at first so i took the sides off and installed some powerpack fans, the cpu is only at about 34 degrees though (b4 the fans were added now it even cooler).

SOunds like you've definitely got another problem here. I've run WIN 98 SE for months and it is, by far, the most stable consumer-oriented version of Windows available. I'd say either a hardware problem or a corrupted Windows install is responsible for your difficulties.

Try running the Win98 SE repair tool under system information, tool. Forgot the actual name of it because WinME doesn't have it.
Illegal operations usually come from a program, driver, dynamic link library, ini file, or any part of the program becoming corrupt.

Try the System File Checker
Start/Programs/Accessories/System Tools/System Information
Click on tools/System File Checker/Scan for altered files/start
Have your Windows 98SE disk handy and replace any corrupt files it finds. Don't worry about backing up the old ones, they're no good anyway.
This little fix solves 95% of 98SE problems! The other 5% will be fixed when the richest dude in the world and his creww get off their a$$es and decided to produce a quality product and not release it before it's time!
Sorry...after using NT (97.6% good), Linux and FreeBSD, I had to say it!

Yea thats it, thanks randy48. Like I said, I've been running WinME since it came out.
Works better on my Tbird 750@1000 abit kt7 than it did on my celeron 400 abit bh6.

Win98 SE is not more stable then FE.
I'm using FE, and there are time that it so corrupted that I had to reinstall everything all over again. They are basically the same thing but I think I prefer SE because the driver are more current, anyway I already paid 90 bucks why pay another 90 just for this.

I have even more of these fatal exceptions now, here they are:
"A fatal exception 0E has occurred at 0028:C14BF449 in VXD IDEVSD(01) + 00000919. The current application will be terminated."
"A fatal exception 0E has occurred at 0028:C14BE4A9 in VXD IDEVSD(01) + 00000919. The current application will be terminated."
"A fatal exception 0E has occurred at 0028:C14C0179 in VXD IDEVSD(01) + 00000919. The current application will be terminated."
As you can see they nearly the same but for the numbers. Has anyone got any ideas what these relate to?? Any help would be much appreciated.
Thanx all

Rob,
Is your processor Overclocked? If so, reverse it and see what happens.
At this point, to rule out hardware, I'd start yanking EVERYTHING out of the case. Leave in ONLY your video card and as small an amount of RAM as possible.
Test machine. If it still flubs up it's a good sign that you need an OS re-install. If it works great, you know the problem lies in hardware (or at least is more likely too).

My cpu is not overclocked and i have tried the hardware thing. Also reinstalled win98 se that many times i can remember the code off by heart. lol
Thanx everyone

The first thing I'd do is oul the non-brand memory and see if your probs go away. Next I'd run Scan Disk, set it to "Thourough" and let it fix any problems. Scan Disk will let you know if your hdd is on it's way out. This would be a start....

It's almost gotta be the RAM, then.

Rob, from what I've seen, W98 is very fickle -- works fine on some (usually newer) systems, and completely breaks down on others. If you had W95, reloading that would probably solve the headaches until you got a new system, then go for Whistler.
I get Blue Screen Fatals in VxD when running Sandra,
or AV software. Turn off the AV (especially when D/L or installing) and no more errors. http://sysopt.earthweb.com/forum/smile.gif

HEY! yea i have the same problem too!
that fatal error occurs when i close down 4 - 5 ie5 browsers after a session of surfing.
the error doesn't go away, then i try to quick boot (booting on windows) and it hangs!
you have to do a system restart.
anyhow just the other day, i forgot which program i was using but that rundll error popped up as well.
win98 was not like this on my old computer with EDO ram.
i think my infineon ram is the problem, i thought infineon's were good enuff.
i smell something fishy, something to with the low prices on sdram. heh

Bflurie--
I've really got to disagree with you on this one. I've done more installs of OS's than I can count, on Socket 7, Socket-370, and Socket/Slot A. I've never once had a single problem with Win98SE itself. Problems that've cropped up have always proven to be elsewhere.
Some other advice--try disabling DMA transfers, update your BIOS, update your board drivers from VIA, set your BIOS for Fail-Safe's, and try other RAM.
