Hi, this is it. I have a machine with a dual boot between Win98SE and WinXP and I need to, as usual ;), reinstall Win98SE. The problem is that if I reinstall Win98SE it will overwrite the boot sector and I wonīt be able to access WinXP anymore. What would u do? What if I enable the Anti-Virus Trend Chip Away (or something like that) on the bios to avoid the boot sector overwrite? Will this work??
All ideas are appreciated.
Thanx

What program or what did you intially do to get it to a dual boot system? If you did use a program it should let you go beyond the initial screen and ask you to boot from a floppy! Hmm, you probably have to boot from a cdrom
well select floppy then that should get you to a prompt, type in your cd rom drive and then go from there! LMK;)

Should be able to run fdisk /mbr after 98 reinstall and fix boot record. Can also boot to the installation CD and run fix boot from the recovery console.

Simple Re-install Win98SE and then Reinstall WinXP:D. I think This will solve ur problem. :D

Windows Xp is in NTFS file right? You must have you hard drive as fat32. Windows 98 se must be intalled on the system first. Then install your windows xp.

outlaw_revolver, the thing is that windoze XP is already installed on my system as Win98SE is. All I need to do is a fresh reinstall of Win98SE, not XP.

I have done this a couple of times, as I have screwed up windows 98 many times. Be that you have a windows98 startup disk around or create on first. I would use the following procedure for setting up the drive:
1.Boot with the startup disk.
2.Format your windows98 partition with "Format C:/q/s". Replace'C' with the letter of the partition which win98 is installed on.
3.Install windows98.
4.Once win98 is installed and working, reboot your computer and boot from the windowsXP CD. When it has loaded to the install menu, press "R" to goto the recovery console.
5.Once logged in to your Windows XP installation, type "bootcfg /rebuilt". It should come up an ask you if you would like to add 'D:\WINDOWS' to the startup menu. Select "Yes". Enter nothing for the 'boot loader' and something like "Windows XP" for the 'boot identifier'.
6.Type "exit" to quit the console and reboot your computer.
7.Upon restarting, the boot menu should come up. If it doesn't, post back as you may need to enter some additional commands in the recovery console.
Good luck! :)
