We have 10 of them P4 HP sys at work i use one all day today it is a dog and compared to my Tbirb
I can't overclock the sys at work so i had to run it stock
All i can say is that my sys seames to run faster than that P4

amd has always rated their cpus more
conservatively than intel , so its
no suprise a 1200 mhz k8 is faster
than a 1500 mhz p4.

Tbirds a K7 http://sysopt.earthweb.com/forum/smile.gif
And its not that its rated more conservatively - 1200Mhz is 1200 Million Cycles per second, any way you cut it.
Its just that The P4 does less per cycle than either the P3 or Athlon/Duron/Thunderbird.
While the P4 is not an impressive chip, the board structure is very impressive (dual channel RAMBUS is 3.2GB/s, and its got a 400Mhz FSB)
The actual processor is the most disappointing part of the entire system.

I'm not the biggest fan of intel. But I'll side with the point that if they can ramp the speed and if the BPU (Branch Prediction Unit) is as good as what I'm used to from intel, then this will be a great processor. They do, however, really need to cut the cost of manufacturing, but that won't happen until the Northwood core comes out.

Mr. GB, i'm not speaking from experience, just from what i have seen in some benchmarks on the net, the P4's prediction actually slows it down a fair bit, it calculates too many things which will never be needed. Upon moving to the P4 it seems intel forgot to try to bump up the FPU power, simply relying on SSE2 to help improve FPU, only problem with this is that the software must be coded correctly to be able to take advantage of SSE2, hence why athlon will eat the P4 up when it comes down to rare FPU grunt. In one benchmark that was highly FPU intensive a PIII 1gig actually scored higher than the P4 1.5gig. so Mhz speed shouldn't be all that is looked at when deciding one a cpu to use.
