Now that I can use standby properly (Thanks to WinMe) I would obviously like to. However, I just noticed today while installing my system in a new tower that when the system goes on standby, the fan on the CPU goes off in standby.

The CPU is a Genuine PIII@500 in Slot 1 format. The whole thing is encased in it`s own cartridge with built in heatsink and fan. The Mobo is a A-bit BE6. The mobo has 3 headers for fans. According to the manual, you use header 2 for the CPU, the others are for case fans. I realize that the CPU uses less power and throttles down on standby, but I wanna make sure first.

Standby never EVER used to work properly on previous windows versions, and it`s nice to see that this has been corrected, but the potential threat of turning my system into a oven is a bit off putting!

Thanks,
Phoenix

I don't like the sound of it. Even if the CPU is drawing only a tiny current on standby, what is saved by stopping a tiny fan? .0000000000001 cents a year? And at what risk? My cpu fan doesn't stop on suspend(older system), but this sounds like a new, absurd implimentation of "green" stuff.

Ok, just an update for ya`ll!

There is an option in the BIOS to leave the fan on all the time. So, needless to say, it is ON ON ON!

As far as I can figure, this is normal. But like matey said there, as long as there is any power going through the CPU, I`m gonna leave the fan ON!

I`ve seen info saying it will do no harm, and also info saying that it may cause harm.....kinda conflicting, wouldn`t ya say?

Anyway, like I said, the fan is ON! Will always be ON! and never OFF!

You could always just check the cpu temp after you've been on standby for awhile to see if anything is heating up too much.

My CPU fan also was powering off, It cost me a PIII 500 cpu due to it! It must have overheated, when I replaced it everything was ok.

If your CPU has a heatsink and fan I'm very suprised stand-by would be a problem for it, even with the fan off.

To prevent this from ever becoming a problem I recommend running a program like RAIN. It's great for cooling chips.

You can got to control panel power management and set option under power management to never and cpu fan should run all the time.
