I am putting a server together(win2000 advanced server just to play with). Just wondering is there a certain NIC I should use. I was just going to use a cheap NetGear NIC. Is Win2000 picky about the kind of of card it likes or doesn't like??? Actually for that matter is it picky about motherboard and processor also? I have a k7vza elitegroup MoBo with an AMD thunderbird 1.5 gighz processor with 512K ram.

Thanks in advance:D

Well my Personal opinion on the "NIC" is that "3-COM" makes one of the best...Don't know anything about "NetGear NIC" But I believe it will serve the same purpose and should work okay.

Don't have a clue about the rest...I'm running XP Pro.

Good Luck!

Win2k Advanced Server isn't very picky about nics. I have used Linksys, 3Com, and SMC without issues. Netgear should be fine.

Of course I am using an Intel Pro in my server right now.:D

I had an unbranded NIC in mine and it was AOK. I am using 3Com now.

As far as the board/processor goes, mine is a duron 700 and it works just fine (serves printer, internet conx, files, profiles)

I have several different NIC's from a $5 used up to a $100 top of the line one and they all work fine as long as you install the CORRECT driver.

A bad driver will make a very good card act like a piece of junk.

3-Com has been around so long that they have the most stable drivers around. At work we tried using an older driver that did not work. After updating to the latest version, the cards work every time.
