Look for the warranty and seek time on the drive! Thats just my opinion!

Both are good drives, I would say flip a coin and pick that way. Today all the major drives are about the same.

Don't let the spin up or rpm fool ya, take a good look at at, look closely at the seek time, don't buy anything over a 9.0 seek time if you can afford it.;)

The real world performance of the drives may vary on your system configuration. What really matters is how the drive performs in your system.

Any of the top drives would be fine.

seagate has quality , superfast and quiet hdd

That's exactly what I've heard :)

Seriously now - between the two I'd take Seagate (if you talking about 7200rpm drive, then Barracuda IV would be your choice).

But, since I tested WD BB series recently, check them out too, if you can.

i would recommend maxtor BUT that's because i've never used a seagate drive before. They both are supposed to be excellent but i read that the d740x is an extremely fast hard drive and with the new firmware it's extremely quiet. Although, to be honest I would wait a couple moths and see how Serial ATA pans out.

As far as brand names go, Maxtor is a good brand, as is Seagate these days. Seagate make great SCSI drives.

It would take much more than two months for Serial ATA to "pan out". I know first chipset with Serial ATA support, by ServerWorks, for P4 Xeon (Prestonia) is gonna be released in few months, and it's gonna take a while for Serial ATA to get inside home users' comps.

More like 2 years from now.

It has to be affordable first.

That will take time.

Hehe I did a little more research and Serial ATA has as much hope of becoming mainstream within the next couple months as I have at hooking up w/ pamela anderson. So disregard my last comment and thank ND for keeping ya straight. Thx for setting me straight guyz.

I have used Seagate hard drives always and never had a prob, excellent drives. My friend has maxtor drives and they also seem excellent. Its a case of choice.

But i prefer Seagate.

Both brands have similar quality history. Both maxtor and seagates had some bad times with quality but these days, they are all above average with differences going in either direction based on what size and model u pick. I personally now use only IBM but that may change.

I have been using Maxtors for the past three or four years and have no regrets yet!

I have heard that their rma is exceptional! Which gives me the idea that they are not buried with returns!

Myself, I have not had to return one yet!

Have the Maxtor 740X at 7200rpm , 8.5ms access time ATA133. 40GB.Unfortunately hooked up to my (mere :) ) ATA100 controller.
Sandra benchs its at 27000 which ain't that far off the raid 0/1 score and thats with it being bottlenecked but the ata100 controller.
Is SOOO quiet when I first installed it I had to stick my ear next to it to check it had powered up ....lol
Only thing about these drives is you need the MaxBlast software from the maxtor web site (bought OEM) to get the thing running but once up and running you REALLY see your system come alive especially after having a Fujitsu 5400rpm before.
Have bought a 1GIG (was years ago) Seagate and was fine too but no idea what the new ones are like.
Cost of the Maxtor 740X is real cheap at around £70-£80. Putting 2 on a Raid set up is very likely on the cards ;)

ill take Seagate over Maxtor, if data is important to you, Maxtor allways been slow to me there seek time isn't real.

Don't buy wd they die in 6 months

I've had very good experiences with both Maxtor and Western Digital HD's.

I would definitely go with a Maxtor. I won't buy Seagate or Quantum due to my past experience and their reputation. Presently I'm running 7200 rpm Western Digital and Maxtor.

I would agree with elroy. Maxtor in the old days were in the same catagory if not worse than seagate and quantum but over the past 5 years, they have slowly exceeded performance and quality and have surpassed the seagate and quantum drives.

I'll have to drop a line in aggreance with sligshot on this one. Though I've had maxtor's die on me (smart fails, plenty of warning, no data loss) the warranty RMA service is top notch!
Both occasions (2 different drives out of 7 I own) I recieved my new drive the same week I filled out the online rma request, no troubles. This last time, just yesterday I recieved a new 40GB ATA/133 as a replacement for my 30GB ATA/100!:D :D :D
Another incident, a guy I built a system for DROPPED the whole box, crashing the drive! (while also shattering the cpu core and doing various other damage)..that drive was also replaced quickly, no questions asked.
Chalk one up for Maxtor!

I used to only use Seagate, until I had a few go bad, Then (3-4 years ago) I switched to Maxtor, and haven't had even one die. Just my personal experience, but I like to go with what works for me.

Well if you buy a Maxtor you may be getting a Quantum drive. Maxtor bought Quantum a little while ago. Quantum is out of the HD business; now they make tape drives. Maxtor integrated Quantum's technology into their own. Actually the D740X drives were designed by Quantum and further developed by Maxtor after they merged.

Terminator:
I have the D740X, too and it is one sweet drive! Coming from a 5400RPM 8.5GIG Maxtor (now slave) made a huge difference. I never dreamed of such speed increases from a HD upgrade alone. I dropped in a Promise ATA100 as my Mobo is too old to take advantage of the drive. (Differences between 100 & 133 were not great enough to justify the higher price of the 133 controller.) And it's still not taking full advantage as my PCI is only running at 33mhz and not 66mhz as current mobos do. But it's much better than what I used to have.

Btw, I didn't have to use MaxBlast.

I did the "ear to the case" thing, too. Yup, it's there!

One last thing: Did you turn of the quiet mode? It slows down the seek time.

Except the IBM 75GXPs. Stay away from these; they have a tendency to fail at about one year. Many people have had problems with them. My daughter's went bad at about 11 months, I have two in IDE raid-0... and will not be surpised when they fail (gives me an excuse to sell my wife on yet another PC upgrade :D).
Other IBMs (like to 60GXPs) are good. Having said this, my next drives will likely be Seagate ATA-IV Barracudas.

Currently IBM has definite issues with Hard drives. Most of what they are selling now are only rated for 333hours per month of operation. Eleven hours a day isn't enough.

Three months ago I would have recommended IBM HD's. Today there's no way I would suggest anyone get one.

hmmm, I am running a deskstar DTLA-3070200 and have been for over two years, no troubles. It is really noisy and was since day one. I also am running a Maxtor ata 100 7200 and it is great as well. I thought Seagate was reviewed poorly and just does not live up to it once good name.

I have a Maxtor D740X 60gb and it is running fine with no problems. While it isn't silent like my old 20gb Fujitsu, it is way faster.

MY EXPERIENCE WITH SEAGATE STARTED DISAPOINTING......BOUGHT THE 20GIG BARRACUDA IV 7200 NEW, COULD DO NOTHING WITH IT, WOULD NOT FORMAT EASILY, TOOK FOREVER, FINALLY TOOK WINDOWS, THEN ON THE RESTART WOULD SAY THE HD WAS DAMAGED, HAD TO RETURN IT AT MY COST AND THEY SENT A REFURBISEHED ONE ( BUT SURE LOOKED NEW ) THEY QUICKY REPLACED IT. I HAVENT HAD A PROBLEM WITH THE REPLACEMENT YET. GOOD AND QUIET, QUICK TOO.

I HAVE 3 MAXTOR 6 GIGS, VERY QUIET, NO PROBLEMS

I THINK I WOULD LEAN TOWARDS THE MAXTOR NEXT TIME THOUGH.;)

I have a Seagate ATA IV 7200RPM 60GB Barracuda series drive and it works great had no problem for the past one year...hope it goes on like this..its my first 7200rpm drive. I had previously owned 3 Seagate's U10,U8 and the medalist, all worked great used all of them for about 4 years till i thought of upgradin to the newer barracuda series and sold them for peanuts. for 110$ this is a great buy.

I run 2 40Gig seagate barracudas.
Always used them in the past and never had a problem with them, apart from one that was very noisy.

Anyway they run perfectly and very quietly so from my point of view they more than do the job.

Cheers,trouble:D

Hi dodsimz,

On top of the already solid advice let me suggest visiting:

http://www.storagereview.com

This place is a great resource for comparing drive speed.

Finally, keep in mind both Maxtor and Seagate have a whole line of hard drives ranging from cheap (5400rpm, low GB/platter) to high end (7200rpm, up to 40GB/platter) so once you decide on a drive make sure you have a model number.

How is this?

I hear the seagate 5400rpm drives avg. 8.9ms seek
7200rpm avg. 9.0ms seek

Its in another post in this forum. My Maxtor 40gig 7200rpm is 8.7ms seek.Last time I checked that was better than either one of those scores.:)
