I would like to make a mod of my neighborhood (or something nearby) for a first person game. I have an SDK for the Serious engine and one for the Modifyed Quake 3 engine. There are others available for free on the net. I'm curious to know which engine you folks prefer, and why.
Another thought, do you suppose any particular engine can give you better looks and performance over another? Example: I make the same mod for several engines. Would one of these give me better visual quality, or more fps?
thanks,

I've heard that quake3 is a very nice engine performance wise. AvP2 used it to good effect.
Personally: I'd head away from the FPS mod and go for the tactical shooter. Make a mod for Ghost Recon. Nothing better than putting a bit of realism into it. You need "Igor", and a 3d program like 3d studio max (if you want to make extra models). I'd love to sneak around my neighbourhood shooting ruskies.
The red faction engine has Geo-mod capability... which is nice but isn't as graphically impressive as quake3.

AVP2 actually used the Lithetech engine - not Quake3.
The Serious Sam engine allows for enourmous outdoor areas, but graphically the Q3 engine takes the lead in my opinion. Just try a couple of the SDK's and see what one you get on with best!

Well the current best engine in my view is the Quake 3 engine, it allows fast framerates while allowing great eye candy.
The Unreal Wafare engine is on it's way and is 10x what Quake 3 is, so that is likely the next big thing.
I prefer the "Next Doom" engine, but I'm having hard times finding it's source codes :D

I like the engine they used on HALO. People were getting about 20 FPS on a 450MHz comp and it has AWSOME graphics

thanks for your replies.
I agree that it would be better to make a mod for a game like Operation Flashpoint for the sake of a more immersive experience compared to one which requires only caffeine and adrenaline. I'd love to see or make a good mod for Deus Ex, or my new fav Medal of Honor: Allied Assault. I think it would be cool to make a game in which the minimum sys req is a Geforce 3 and an Athlon 1800+.:D
I agree that Q3 has good eye candy, but imho the serious engine looks better because of the large outdoor scenes and can have so many enemies on the screen all at once. Ah, they're both good.
MOHAA has some good AI. The enemies aren't as stupid as the serious bots. Wolfenstein has also taken us to the next level. I just can't wait for Deus Ex 2 and Soldier 2 to come out.
cheers,
