Is there a way in win98 to allow for remote access to a single directory on my system? I need a way to get my files off my computer from the computers at school and I've been using disks but I have too many and they often times crash.

Just right click the folder and click on share. Set your permissions (use a password to be safe).

Ok, but how would I actually access my computer?

Does the computer have internet access?
Maybe you can email them to yourself.

if you have an 'always on' connection like dsl or cable modem then you could set up an ftp server on your system at home and set up an account for yourself. you could access that from anywhere. i have one set up and it's really nice to have.

yeah, my computer has an always on connection. Would I need an FTP server program or is it something built into windows?

There may be others but we use WarFTP on our home computers and access them from work. We just set ourselves up as users in War and use CuteFTP from work to connect to our ip number at home. Easiset way I have found so far. You could also access the one running War through dos ftp but any ftp program like Cute makes it much easier.
There's also PCAnywhere but I think it's a bit overkill for us since we just need to get at our files.
