Looking to burn a few.....

With Christmas right around the corner, I have requested a cd-rw from my significant other.I know you wizards out there can pick out the best burner for me. What do ya think?

Does neccesary software come with? I keep hearing about Nero. Can I download this or must I purchase?Thanks for the thread, NDC.

Yes, neccessary CD burning software does come bundled with Plextor CDRW's. They come with Adaptec Easy CD Creator. IMO, Easy Cd Creator does a great job for my purposes! And I haven't been able to find a program like Adaptec Direct CD which come with Easy CD Creator which you can drag and drop files & folders in Exporer as you would when copying files & folders to a hard disk to a CDR or CDRW media.

I hear that Nero can burn CD's with more precise control over the burning environment, such as burning protected CD's for backup. But I use Padus Disk Juggler which burns protected CD's quite nicely. http://sysopt.earthweb.com/forum/smile.gif

Yes the Plextor's are supposedly the best. I have good experiences with RICOH's too though. You will pay quite a price for a Plextor.

Yeah, go with the plextors, man! I have a 32/12/10 ide jobbie and it's the dog's. Incidentally it came with WinonCD software not adaptec like someone else mentioned. Maybe this has something to do with location (I am from England!). CEQuadrat are German and I suppose shipping it to England is only a stones throw compared to the US??

The Winon CD is good software, I previously used Adaptec Easy coaster burner and that was erm.................****e! I do rate Direct CD much better for packet writing (CDRW) than CEQuadrat's PacketCD. So there are pro's and con's.

Anyway, it's burnproof, writes a CD in about 5 to 7 minutes, and upto now absolutely ZERO bad discs (out of about 60!!) http://sysopt.earthweb.com/forum/smile.gif http://sysopt.earthweb.com/forum/smile.gif

The Yamaha is 16 speed write I believe. This is just silly speed! To my knowledge there is only 1-make of CDR that is 16X rated. 12X are in abundance and are becoming standard.

Can't go wrong with Plextor. I also have a SCSI Teac which is great. It's qualified for overburning (I can get almost 76 1/2 min on a 74 min cd!). There are different "Best" burners. I guess it all depends on what you plan to do with it. Have fun with whatever you get!!
