I have burned quite a few disc's with my new Plextor 32/12/10 (smug http://sysopt.earthweb.com/forum/smile.gif) and know certain undesirable guys who burn discs for 'a living'. Anyway they always say that you can burn Audio at Max speed even on cheap dics, it doesn't matter a ****....they last! Data/PSX/Dreamcast is different, better quality is the key and ensure your discs are rated at the speed you are recording.

So in answer to your question 'can it shorten the lifespan of the disc' Yes for data and no for audio, it all depends what you put on 'em and the quality of disc used.

hope that helps

PS How come I am classed as a 'Junior Member'?????

Okay, I have posted 24 times as my current user name, but many many many more as other usernames adn for some silly reason forgot my password! doh! And so started a new Username. Is the number of posted related to your 'status', even though you could be posting ****! (which some are!!, but most are not)

Hiya Warthog, what I meant by "life span" was more of a question of the CD's integrity and ability to last after it's burned and stored away. I've burnt CD's with important data on them before at 4x on low cost media, and came to find that some of them ended up with corrupted sectors (ex. cannot read some files). This happened even though no errors were reported by Easy CD Creator. I've never attempted to copy console games. I've got about 40 gigs worth of my own MP3 albums (100% store bought...shame on the Nap!), and I'd like to finally archive them on quality media.

Would burning CD's at 8x actually shorten the life span of the disc? Why are some lower quality blanks (CompUSA, etc.) so transparent? Does this have something to do with the integrity of the disc? Is it recommended to archive important data at 8x? What types of CD-R media would be the best for archiving and storing, and what speed would you recommend? Thanks in advance! http://sysopt.earthweb.com/forum/smile.gif

What do you mean by "shorten the life span of the disc"? Like, if you play it X times, it will not work anymore? Certain drives do not like burning at max speed and will produce coasters if you do so. That is the extent of my knowledge http://sysopt.earthweb.com/forum/smile.gif
