I cant figure this one out. I have 2 telephone lines, one designated for the computer. No one knows this number.

this has happened a few times, my kids are playing a game. They are offline. My computer line will ring, I suppose someone has called it by mistake. My computer totally locks up. The only way to get out is to kill the power. Any ideas what would cause this? thanks, David

See if there is a "Wake-On Modem Call" feature (or something like that) in your BIOS. If there is, disable it. Also if your computer was store bought, check if it came with any Fax software that is configured to accept incoming calls.

"Unlisted" or "Private" phone numbers won't keep you safe from tele-marketers (especially phone companies), broadcast faxes, war-dialers, or, if the number is similar to something like a radio station call-in number, mistaken dials.

Dominus has it right. If you can't fix the comp (the modem might have a hardware problem), you can have the phone company disable incoming calls to that number. A hassle but it works.
