I have two CD-capable units in my machine: Aopen 40X CD-ROM and Creative 6/24X DVD-ROM.

Now, when ripping music CD:s I've always used the Aopen, 'cause I thought it would be faster. This normally gave me ripping speeds around 8-10X.
Now, however, I have an extra hdd installed, and the Aopen CD-ROm is not connected. So, I used the DVD-player... Guess what? This one gives me 20-25X ripping and top quality.

Can't believe I've never tried it before. I've had this setup for a long time now *lol*

Question is: Why is the slower player faster?

It could be your DVD-ROM features a larger physical cache memory than the CD-ROM. Most CD-ROM's use a small 256-512 KB cache, while some DVD-ROMS have upwards of 1-2 Megabyte of cache.

Rob, do you happen to know what size of cache Diamonds Creative 12/40x DVD-ROM's have? Due to my case only having two 5" bays, I am using my 12/40x DVD-ROM drive for all CD software instead of my 52x Kenwood CD-ROM.

A LOT of cdr speed ratings are not near the actual performance. There are some free benchmark softwares out there that will tell the tale. I once had a 24 that benched at about 12. Lessee......Yep here's a great page full of solid benchmarking tools: http://www.benchmarkhq.ru/b_e.html
