I recently read about the company macrovision. it has developed coppy protection for cable tv, satalite, taping of vhs and more. its protection is suposed to drasticaly degrade unauthorized copies to the point of being unwachable. their protection is said to be wide spread and I have heard people complain that they experienced problems of this nature when taping from a source. In all my years of taping from various soces I have never had such a problem. I was just wondering why that might be.

I don't know if it is the same company but here is some info on the SDMI (http://www.cs.princeton.edu/sip/sdmi/faq.html) (Secure Digital Music Initiative) Challenge.

The Mighty One,
I have seen something recently about this,(may have been on this board).
It seems that new VCR's have this system, there is some signal on the tape, and the recording VCR responds to it, the same is true of DVD, and satellite film channels.
Some DVD's can have this switched off.
It makes it almost impossible to copy tapes, even for 'legal' reasons.
I believe a converter can be bought, but is it worth it ?

Macrovision isn't new. You can find a *hitload of info on it in the internet. Basically its function is to prevent copying directly into vhs. Newer vcrs detect this signal and try to copy it, very old vcrs ignore it (as do tvs).
Try www.macrovision.com (http://www.macrovision.com) for specs =)

By referring multisystem you mean pal/ntsc playback? I have toshiba v705w which does both playback (bought it in 98). Not all the tapes have macrovision. But mine sure messes the video up if I try to copy a protected tape. Don't really know how much it is used in the states, nor here (since all the copying I do is directed to a video-in g-card and then burned into a cd). Anyway, vhs sucks =)

All the vCRS i've had in the past were multi systems and the 2 I have now are a model made in 98 and one in 96 both multi systems. I recently copied a movie from pay per view and it was perfect I coppy from satalite tv fairly often without problems. I had no idea this coppy protection stuff existed up untill recently. are multi system vcrs immune to this?
