Trying to install WIN ME.
I have a intel 200 MMX pentium-s
128 meg RAM, 25 gig hd w/ 23 gig free. w/WIN 95.
Using a Promise ULTRA 66 CARD as bios wont handle large drive.

install gets to step where it check HD for free space, finishes check and an error message pops up - "Program error - FLOATING POINT SUPPORT NOT LOADED"

I HAVE TRIED INSTALLING FROM cd (HAVE 2 COPIES - ms SENT ONE THINKING ORIGINAL cd WAS BAD).

i HAVE TRIED INSTALLING FROM HD.

i HAVE TRIED INSTALLING AFTER BOOTING UP IN MSDOS.

ALWAYS GET THIS MESSAGE.

I've uninstalled Virus protection. cleaned out startup folder and the task bar.

No other errors until this point in install

Can anyone help???

Microsoft seems confused as much as I am.

You have to have the drivers for the Promise card installed since its not built into the motherboard. And the hard drive is on the card.

When you say you tried installing from the hard drive, does that mean you booted to the hard drive and then ran setup from CD or that you copied the flat directory from the Win Me CD and ran setup from the copied directory on the hard drive?

Go into the BIOS ans disable external Cashe if you have any. I once had an old PC Chips board that was supposed to cache, but always screwed up the installation (a but like yours) of Windows 95.

There's no harm in giving it a try. Remember to reactivate when you finished - Cache adds about 4-6% speed increase.

Thanks for replying,
I did both and had the same error message at the same point.

boot to a windows 95 startup disk and reformat the hard drive using the command format c: /c/u (this command tells DOS to check clusters that have been marked bad and then format drive c: unconditionally, filling all sectors with F6's, eliminating any nonrelocatable code in the process)

set the CDROM as the first boot device in BIOS and then boot to the WIN Me CD and proceed with the setup

you shouldn't have to worry about chipset drivers with WIN Me
