Can someone help please.
I had a system with a microstar motherboard and Athlon700 processor, all worked fine for over a year until the motherboard packed up.

I was sold a Gigabyte GA-7ZXE replacement, but since I built it I can't get the puter to switch off. Everything else works fine, but when I close down windows, the machine immediately reboots. I have even tried to switch on and off begore the OS loads so it is not a software problem. The power switch acts as a reset button, and the reset button works OK
The only way I find around it, is to close down windows and when the screen goes blank, I press in the power button and hold it for 5 secs, then it will goe off.
All case connections have been rechecked and conforms to the manual ie power switch, power led, Hdd led, reset button and spkr. This only happens with this new board.

Have you checked the motherboard's auto-on options. I had a similar problem recently (although not quite severe). The laptop that was connected to my desktop on a LAN was waking the computer right back up.

Just about every motherboard has an option to disable ACPI, commonly known as Advanced Power Configuration Interface. This option allows the computer to hiberate, standby, and shutdown on its own.

If this GA board has an Award BIOS, look for this option under "Advanced Configuration", or look for something related to power, I know its in there, take a peak in the manual for that motherboard to be certain. You want to disable it. Once you have disabled it, save the CMOS settings and reboot. Try to shutdown. It should work, has helped me in the past.
