I have a clean partitioned and formatted hard disk.
I made a Win98 startup disk, booted and selected start with CD support.
On previous advice from SysOpt, I put the upgrade cd in the tray and typed D:setup and the install started. I entered the Product Key number and was asked to insert my old cd. I put in my OEM Win95 CD, Browsed to D: and clicked OK. I got a message that I did not have a valid product.
I exited the install and did A DIR of d: which showed "No Files Found." How could the system run setup run from the CD drive but not allow me to get a DIR listing? C: drive shows a prompt, and small DOS programs run on it. I can get a D Prompt, I can get any prompt up to F: E: is a RAM drive and there are files in it. What is happening here.

when you put your old cd in, you should have browsed to d:\win95 and life would have been good

It turned out that none of the setup drivers would set up the CDROM. I found the driver on WWW and installed it. after that it was possible to browse to the drive.

That's always a possibility on older systems with non-Atapi compliant drivers. Congratulations on resolving the issue.

It was a good example of how working with old components can go. I was surprised to find the driver, I found the same driver in two places but not any other Takaya models (apparently Takaya made one only model and gave it up). Thanks for the support.:D
