just installed red hat, dual boot with windows xp pro. did the whole installation okay, well i think i did. rebooted and red hat starts to boot:

first question, it does all these things saying "start ______ [y]" and then it says press 'I' to start something. is that the letter i or what? and what does it do?

second question, or third.
i get to the part where you have to log in. i log in, it says "authentication failed" do i use the log in name "administrator" then my password?

I can help with one thing - the logon. There is no "Administrator" account in Linux. The admin account is called root. You just add your password.

The "i" is for an interactive startup, you need'nt press "i" as everything should boot fine, and if you are getting to the login screen then I guess it does anyway !

You should have added a username and password (as well as a root password - I know I had to with Redhat 7.1), which can be used when you are presented with the Gui

The fun part of the linux installation comes when you try to config your modem - Good luck if it is an internal modem, I would just stump up the $$ for an external, it makes things much easier :)

The problem has nothing to do with whether a modem is internal or external. The difficulties are when someone attempts to use a winmodem as opposed to a controller based modem. Getting a winmodem to work in Linux can be either difficult or impossible , depending on which one you have.

You should have no problem with any controller based modem , be it internal or external, although internal modems are usually much cheaper than external ones.
