Hi. I just got a PC from a friend & he says it's a 486DX50. I am using it now it it seems ok. he said that its a fast 486, but I don't know. I just want to chat with people. It seems ok. it has 20 megebits of rom I think. Is that enough? thank you, Linda.

Heck! It's free! http://sysopt.earthweb.com/forum/smile.gif

20MB RAM being enough would depend on the OS and applications you're going to be running on it. What OS is installed on it now? Win 3.1, Win95, Win98, etc? And how big is the hard disk on it?

i'm relatively new to all of this too, somebody correct me but 486 is essentially a 66mhz machine right..i remember my 486 that i got for free.was pretty quick with windows 3.1..200meg hard drive..the more you use it,the slower it will seem to be.but like NDC said it's free.so enjoy and welcome to sysopt.

That would be a 486-DX2 66Mhz.

Standard 486-DX came in 50Mhz and also 33Mhz, I believe

As for 486-DX4, they came in 100Mhz.

Heh, heh,.....they come slower than that!! My girlfriend still runs a 486DX/25, and it seems to me that I used to have a 486SX/16 way back!

Oh, Yeah! I forgot about the SX models! LOL. Wow 16Mhz... I wonder how Win9x would run on one of those suckers!

I had a friend from school who still had a 486 DX-40 and it ran win95 pretty fast.He had 16mb.20mb for a 50mhz is quite a lot,that's a good thing.

Now an important thing is the seize of the harddrive.I got a Pentium 166 a week ago or so ( http://sysopt.earthweb.com/forum/biggrin.gif ).It came without hd.So I had a 116mb hd.That was enough to install a full 32bit win95 with IE,but didn't leave much room for other things.I'd say that for just surfing the web you'd need at least a 200mb harddrive.
