Ok guys,
I was at work today and some dude brought in a pc....now before this thing finishes loading into windows it reboots. Tried booting into safe mode, thinking it was a driver problem or maybe an ACPI setting, and it did the same thing. Tried just about every possible thing short of reseating the proc...new memory, power supply, system restore, new hard drive, the works...now when I booted with a boot disk, it booted fine, and I left it on..and it was fine. Once I tried to get back into windows, it reboots...
So what do you all think?

Does it reboot into to a dos prompt?
What OS? Can you select startup with bootlog?
Have you cleared NVRAM?

Need more info?????
System specs would help us out including OS.
That way were not beating around the bush......Let's fix it right the first time instead of wasting time. :D

Ok, it's a MicronPC
Celeron 600
some jacked no name board (s370 I believe)
128 SDR prolly PC100
20 GB HD
onboard sound & vid.
Unit boots into Windows (O/S win 98) gets to the point where systray icons start appearing and then reboots. It then gives me the default boot option list, when safe mode is selected, it will boot into safe mode, and then reboot. My guess is there is some device driver causing this... Just pretty much tried replacing parts for the last 20 min of my shift.
Sorry if the specs are a little light...
Thanks as always

can you ever get into safe mode (after a second or third try or if booting to menu? ifso, check ASD.

Well, I swapped out the power supply the other night and it did the same thing :( I guess it just likes to reboot.
As far as getting into any sort of operating environment, the only thing that it will boot into and run is DOS from any startup disk.
Can't get into safe mode, can't get into windows :(
Don't know what the problem is. Could it be the power connector for the PSU on the board is bad? Then again I had it running today off a boot disk for start up for like a half hour, but that really doesn't help.
Userserver, thanks a lot for your time and input.

since you can boot to dos (and you haven't been able to get fully into windows for some time) I think you should try to restore the registry.
remove any pci cards, printers, scanners, USB devices, serial port devices, and boot to emergency startup disk
A:> C:
C:>cd WINDOWS
C:\WINDOWS>cd COMMAND
C:\WINDOWS\COMMAND>SCANREG /RESTORE
at this point you should have access to a max of five "good" registries. select the most recent and see if windows thinks it's good. if not, select the next one.
pull the floppy when the system starts to reboot and see if you can get into windows.
if this fails, clear NVRAM once more, then you have two remaining options that I see.
OPTION 1 -- Install windows on top of itself
1. boot to dos via startup disk or win98 CD
2. create a win98 directory on drive C:
3. copy contents of win98 folder from CD to C:\win98
4. run setup from C:\win98
OPTION 2 -- clean reinstall
1. boot to win98 CD
2. FDISK /MBR
3. FORMAT C: /C/U
4. create a win98 directory on drive C:
5. copy contents of win98 folder from CD to C:\win98
6. run setup from C:\win98
you've spent this much time on this issue already, so I think I'd spend the extra hour trying Option 1 (if you have data you want to preserve). select APM or None in bios if you have that option under power management.
Option 2 has the added advantage of removing any virus or trojans on the hard drive.
don't forget to install the latest chipset drivers after windows setup completes.

I have a Micron PC 700mhz celeron also with the same problem. It is a little over a year old and was running fine then started to reboot during use now it reboots when windows starts up and the icons in the lower right boot up. I have restored the system but still have the problem. Can you give me any advice?
Sincerely,
Tim
