having major problem here.
When booting the PC has started coming up with a CMOS Checksum Error message and refuses to boot. From my local forums and internet sources i have narrowed the problem to 3 things: RAM, MOBO, CPU
My thinking is that if the RAM or CPU were nuked, i wouldnt even be able to get a signal to the monitor - so that left me thingking that it must be the Mobo, I have tried clearing CMOS over and over with no success, and think the Error may be in the CMOS, someone suggested that i could flash the BIOS with a newer version to overwrite the corrupt data..any ideas?
thanks

PS - information i have recieved from other sources:
The bios and cmos are different animals.. leave the bios alone at
present.
Flashing the bios can be fun at the best of times,,, if your m/b is sick don`t risk causing more problems.
A cmos checksum error.. seen a few so not too desparate yet ;-)
Unlikely but the cmos battery could be nearly flat (its a silver watch type battery (usually cr2022 or cr2032)
Try leaving the machine for 1 to 2 hours,,preferably warm room.... try ONCE..will it boot ..if so change £2 battery
Short circiuit the cmos memory (read manual) normally pins 1&2 or in use short pins 2&3 to reset. then put back
in case something has unset... at same time reset bios to default.....
THEN WITH A FLOPPY IN DRIVE ( to prevent some windows settings bogging things
up) see if you can get
to a dos prompt.... if so .. reset and try for a windows startup...
Could be memory. (seen it do this ) .. if several sticks... pull out and try individual sticks....if only one, pinch your sisters :D
Unlikely to be cpu with the problems you have said (although don`t overclock anything for now)
M/b possible, but if setting or battery, can be recovered... surprised if its goosed.. as this is not a typical dead board problem,, of course I could be wrong ;-((
Again I would not flash the bios until everything else has been looked at,,don`t kill the board
Only one flash chip is available per board, you cannot buy another flash chip individually.....
Yes in future when the flash description warrants it, do it,,, but only when no problems
