AMD K62 500, 512 RAM Win98 first edition

Some time after installing a new NVidia Gladiac 511 PCI graphics card and (separately) DirectX 8, I found that my MSDOS prompt (and DOS programs) will not work in full screen, only in a window.
Wheneve full screen selected, screen goes blank (black) and the video appears to hang. Windows still working as I can close it down normally using the right sequence of keystrokes.

If I revert to a generic VGA driver, the DOS prompt works happily in full screen

Tried the ELSA FAQs online and did the change the refresh rate in Direct X trick that they suggested. No joy.

Any ideas out there

What driver are you using for your graphics card?
Have you changed the old vid card back to Standard PCI VGA removing and installing the new vid card?

When I installed the card I used the Elsa installation disk as advertised and everything appeared to work OK

Only when (after a month or so of problem free use) I tried to use MSDOS in full screen did I find the problem. If I go back to control panel/display etc and change the driver to generic VGA card, then the MSDOS problem goes away. But I did not pay that sort of money to have to use a generic VGA driver (I was doing better than that with my previous 4MB card.

Incidentally, I did download the latest driver from the Elsa web site after I found the problem. They ask you to do that before asking for help. That was a disaster; I could not get any display at all after that abortion was installed - had to go back via Win98 startup disk to Windows safe mode to change back. Used the Elsa original installation CD and opted to install all the files that were announced to be "older than the ones currently on your system". That seems to have got me back to the original standard (complete with original DOS problem)

I just notice another posting on this site which sounds similar - a person with a new nvidia driver and no video at all
