I started my computer after school today and found I couldn't connect to the internet! Well...it would dial and show a connection in the systray, but I couldn't go anywhere online. The incoming/outgoing transfer rate was about 500 bytes per second. I restarted - nothing. Checked dial-up config - nothing.

I then remembered that after I had disconnected last night, I had just downloaded a program called "Mail Control" from download.com (never dl it - it is evil!). It is sort of an email firewall: it blocks unauthorized email from being sent or recieved (incase of a virus). I virus checked it with the latest McAfee dat files. During installation, it started to frig up.
-when I would scroll down a little bit, it would scroll down a lot.
-If I clicked on something in a list, it would click on something far down the list.
-If I clicked a button, it would delay or not work at all.
I installed it, thinking that it was a windows error. Restarted, but it still didn't work (same symptoms but WORSE).

I fumbled into Add/Remove programs and uninstalled the cursed thing. Woo! Problem fixed. Shutdown comp and went to bed.

Back to the beginning of my story.

I found one file in the registry that related to it and deleted it. Restarted comp and still didn't work. I have downloaded Registry Cleaner but couldn't find any files relating to it.

Right now I am using my dad's computer. He just did a reformat so all his system files are correct incase I need to "borrow" them for my comp.

BTW, I checked to see if there were any errors with my modem in Control Panel. None.

I am convinced that Mail Control did something to my comp. http://sysopt.earthweb.com/forum/frown.gif

Any ideas????

Restart your computer in MS-DOS Mode.
At the C:\Windows> prompt, type:

scanreg /restore

Don't forget the space after scanreg.
Hit enter and then select a date previous to your mishap.

Cheers!

Oh! And a PS: This only works for Win98 and up.

It worked perfectly. That's about the only feature I like about Win98 http://sysopt.earthweb.com/forum/wink.gif. And thanks, doc, for the alternate method http://sysopt.earthweb.com/forum/smile.gif
