What files are needed to bypass the verifcation of the win 98se upgrade.
The reason i'm asking is i have a Compaq computer and my restore cd wont work with my new hardrive i just purchased.
Called compaq and they said its because its to large.

2nd Question, I think that Compaq offers some "sofpacs" to allow the usage of a non-Compak HD.
Have ya searched their site.
I'd exhaust these options before doing the generic Win98 route

He said that for my model of Compaq the are no softpaqs to change the drive size.
originally it was 4.3
now it's 20.5

LOLOL Now that is a truly bad excuse! Only Compaq would even dare that one. Ok the way around I found without using the the Quick reRuin CD.Is I put my old hard drive as a second HD. The easy way for me was my new HD and CD on the first ide channel and the old HD on the second. Then when Win/SE asked me where to look for Win98 I told it to look there "D" on mine. Anyway something like this will work. Mykex

when it say's it can't find windows swap out 98 upgrade for a 95 disk(or 95 companion) browse, point to the 95 disk, click 0k,and it will find your "old operating sys" swap the disk back when prompted and away you go

Have ya went to the BIOS and manually entered the HD specs ?
It should see a 8gb HD anyway,, maybe not more but 8 is better than nothing.
I recently put a modern HD in a old box, Win 95.
The machine would only see 8 gig, I didn't have a lot of time to flash the BIOS, which I'm not to familiar with anyway.
Don't take Compaq's word for it, look for the sofpaqs yourself, or post your model number here and I'll do it.

I dont' think Comsmack is being truthful. I have the same disk, and I also, am having trouble getting the disk to load. I thought that it was because I did not have their boot disk. Are you saying that you have their boot disk and cannot get it to load?

I doubt very seriously that it is the HD size the machine that I was trying to install it on had a 2GB HD. I was actually about to post myself about this problem.

Btw if your model does suport a second IDE channel and you try my nutty methode. Dont worrie about anything from your old HD getting into your new SE setup. Just make sure that when Win asks where you want to put Win/SE it is on your new HD it will prolly default to where the current Win is. Not the new HD as in change D:/Windows to C:/Windows for example.

ohh and this kind of thing brought me to take a hammer to my Compaq. http://sysopt.earthweb.com/forum/wink.gif Unfortunatly .....I still keep the old HD with the Compaq stuff loaded in case I have to totaly reformat. One other thing in the restore mode before you start ...I think its on the "are you sure prompt" you can hit alt or cntl F8 and you get an option to say yes or no to everything in the setup. For some reason it runs smoother this way???? It even gets my past THIS IS NOT A COMPAQ PC prompt.

error # 3 out of memory has 248 megs blah

Best of luck to you......btw which model is it? Been trying to remember all the tricks I had to learn to keep mine going...before I murderd it. I cant remember if it was cntrl or alt but pretty sure it was F8. That got me into the prompt mode. I was actually considering mailing you my jumpstart HD http://sysopt.earthweb.com/forum/smile.gif it kills me to see others get into this stuff. My trouble got realy fun when Compaq online help suggested the power supply under powered. Never telling me that it was a proprietary PS with AT style connectors on an ATX PS. If you need to vent goto www.compaqsucks.com (http://www.compaqsucks.com) they seem to thrive on vulgar vent sesions. http://sysopt.earthweb.com/forum/wink.gif

heavilly modified

That may be your problem being heavily modified.......those quick restore cd's hate anything not originaly in the pc out of box.
Question ...did you at anytime format the old harddrive? I am surprised my look in the D drive methode didnt work after simply removing it and temporarily reinstalling just to get the ok from win/se?
Im on a mission now! going for a deep search for answers.........

Yes its formated its a new drive.!
anayway's i went and got a bootable full version of win98 from a neighbor.
just popped it a minute ago.
Compaq uses a NON-DOS partition that has to be there, that's where part of the BIOS is, they call it SETUP. Here's a link that will help you: http://www.gw.total-web.net/~dperr/compaq.htm
You will need to follow the directions on that site to load Setup and Diagnostics before you try and load the OS. It does not matter what size or brand of Hard Drive you use.

Well that doesn't cut it.
since the restore cd is COPYING an image to the drive and re-writting the MBR and FAT
The restore cd is a PowerQuest image writter.
Partition Magiq is from the same co.

Well glad to here your up and running. http://sysopt.earthweb.com/forum/smile.gif Or at least going in that direction.
Btw sorry I was not clear on the format question I refering to your old drive. Maybe I wasn't clear at all now that I took a walk and cleared my head on this. What I meant with my backdoor kinda fix was when Windows setup asks me to insert cd to authenticate I press ok. Then it gives me the browse to find option and I point to the Windows98 folder on my old HD. I am still looking for the wrong way to do this "hacklike" it has something to do with loading cab files on a floppy.I do own Win98 just not on any CD so I am not really hacking the upgrade CD for a cheap full install. I just cant do it the "right" way. Its to bad that you have to look for the fine print to make sure your PC actually comes with a Windows CD. http://sysopt.earthweb.com/forum/frown.gif
