Look for total 655,360 total bytes memory. If it is less you may have a virus. A boot sector virus will decrease the total conventional memory in DOS. This is NOT a foolproof method, it's quick and dirty and it's something that anyone can do. As for your Bootdisk, get one from a friend . If you download a clean Win98se Bootdisk from www.Bootdisk.com , do it on another pc. Then,Scan the disk for viruses. Regardless, write protect the bootdisk, always. BTW, a good virus scanner will scan the boot sector of a fixed or removable disk. userserver 02-05-2002, 03:28 AM You can boot to a write-protected floppy and run fdisk /mbr to rewrite the boot sector to clear a boot sector virus though it won't prevent reinfection. You can reboot and set bios virus protection to warn or prevent reinfection, depending on your bios. SysOpt.com
