I want to buy a 19" monitor. The horizontal frequency should be not less than 96KHz and the price not much than $350. But it must have the best quality.
Which brand (and which model) would you recommend for me between LG, SAMSUNG and SONY.

What is the importance of 96Khz?
I believe any of the three manufacturers listed will suffice. My experience has been dependent on what was offered at the time. I have a KDS monitor, best monitor I ever owned.

Flat screen CRT or conventional CRT?
I have the Samsung SyncMaster 955DF and it works great.

Just choose your country, then choose a monitor. Couldn't get the link to work for directing to the 955DF.
Don't have links for a Sony monitor, sorry.

What's the difference between flat screen and conventional (especially what is a conventional one)?
A conventional screen will have rounded vertical and horizontal screen, making it less view space than a flat screen and prone to reflections from light sources. If you have $350us, then I would suggest you go with a NEC which are true flat screen ampeture grille monitors like the Sony Trinitrons, but at a lower cost. Avoid shadow mask monitors if you spend alot of time in front of it.

Why the comment about shadow mask monitors?

Go with the SONY!!! If you want the best... SONY SONY SONY!
The other monitors you are conisidering probably use the Sony FD Trinitron tube. So why not just get the original! You can't go wrong and you can now find 19" Sony monitors for around $350.

Thank you all.
So, I consider that you say in such way:
1. Sony;
2. Samsung;
3. LG.
Am I right? Which model would you recommend for me (Samsung and Sony)?

Hi Kurylo,
After working with over 100 monitors in my many years of computing let me suggest:
For the gamer/graphics use:
Aperature grill, flat screen monitor of the smallest dot pitch available and the largest size you can afford. Quality 19" models include:
Sony GDM-F400 (out of price range but the best)
Mitsubishi Diamond Pro 900u (a little bit out of price range)
Now for ones that are near your price range:
Sony CDP-G400 ($339 Mwave.com....my AG selection)
Samsung Syncmaster 900NF ($369....Newegg.com)
For General Use/some gaming/mainly text and Internet:
Shadow mask, flat screen monitors with the smallest dot pitch available and the largest size you can afford. Quality 19" models include:
Hitachi Superscan CM715 (Best Buy at $235, Newegg.com)
Samsung Syncmaster 955DF (another good buy at $259 at Newegg.com)
Keep in mind some monitors may call themselves natural flat, near-flat, etc. meaning they are not truly flat. Don't worry if they aren't perfectly flat.....close to flat is really good enough.
Also note the price premium you pay for AG monitors vs. shadow mask. The main differences are the AG slot design allows for more vivid color and clarity with the drawback of being able to see the two (on a 19" monitor) thin horizontal damper wires on the screen (generally only seen on white or light colored backgrounds...some people hate it while people like myself have no problems). If you're not a very picky person about graphics then a shadow mask monitor will suit your needs just fine and keep a few bucks in your pocket.
Finally, if your the "bidding" type let me suggest:
www.ubid.com
I've bought dozens of items from them without problem. If you know what your looking for and know what a good price is you can generally get some fantastic deals.....if you're patient. You may even be able to get a 21 inch refurbished monitor for your price range....although beware of shipping charges, they do gouge you on them.
Good Luck

JeffD

Hi Kurylo,
I just noticed your location and it's unlikely you could get something from the US or ubid cheaply enough although the information I gave on places to buy from may be useful to others in this forum.

don't go with sony because they have gauge wire running across the screen and it's really annoying
i just bought an LG flatron not bad but it might be just over your budget.
and sony monitors are NOT 18inch viewable..

Did i mention that there is a LG 995FT for $310 in our stock?
And, JeffD, thanks to your patience and exact monitor grouping. Sure, I can't buy anything being shipped into Ukraine (except some sites, including Crucial (for $37!!!)).
But I can buy such monitor in our stocks. All I needed is the information.
And another question. As I see, those monitors differ only by mask they have. Doed it play such great role?
What are the disadvantages of 'Internet and text' monitors behind 'graphics and gaming' monitors? What are the differences?

Comments.....
To nh3com,
The gauge wire as you call it is not only with Sony but ANY aperature grill tube based monitors. For this reason they will be present in many Mitsubishi (Mitsubishi liscenced AG technology from Sony early on and improved it a bit in their Diamondtron technology), Viewsonic, Samsung, LG and others.
Also, as I mentioned in my previous post. The wire is called a damper wire and can generally only be seen on light colored backgrounds. I also mentioned some people cannot stand them. I recall a comment from someone using a AG based monitor for the first time.......
"What's with the wires, my eyes are drawn to them like magnets I think because I know they are there."
Some people dislike them while others are OK with them. I, myself have no problems since they are so fine and I quickly forget they are there. For this reason it's best to go out to a store/friend's place and view one first hand to make sure it's not an issue for your eyes.
Now to Kurylo's question to me:
The best shadow mask (SM) tubes today are not that far behind AG tubes in the graphics department. As I hinted in my previous message, here's a bit more detail on the differences between the two tubes:
AG tubes technology (pioneered by Sony) uses relatively large slots (vs. smaller, round holes with SM) which allows more phosphor to be exposed. This results in a brighter picture with better saturation, contrast and vividness. The drawback is the larger slots are generally known for less distinct text....i.e. you'll notice small text at high resolutions being fuzzier than a SM based tube.
Consequently, I feel if someone doesn't mind the damper wires and doesn't stare at text all day at high resolutions, a AG based monitor is the better purchase. OTOH any newer shadow mask technology monitors (such as Samsungs) have closed the once large gap between the two tube technologies and are a fine choice for general computing.

if there's an imperfection on the screen i can't help but look at it all the time (even if it's not a imperfection it's there by design) , it's like when a TFT screen has missing patches can't but look at the missing pixel.
LG Flatrons don't have the wires so i that’s why i would go for them all the time.

JeffD, thank you. From your reply I understood that I should buy a newer Samsung. But I don't understand which of them is new. Excuse me for my abuse, but how would you sort in order those models (seeking in the catalogue):
959NF, 957DF, 955DF, 957P, 955B, 900IFT, 900NF... what else?
I guess, that monitors, which are not in bold font aren't flat. Am I right? And I've heard about 2 flat types: a) fully flat and b) vertically flat. I'd like to buy a fully flat one. Which monitors of this list I gave don't fit my selection?
... and another one: Philips 109S for $359 ...

Something that is lost in this argument is reliability. If you're in the market and decide on the Aperature Grill /True Flat model, they all use the Sony Trinitron tube. They do not all use Sony electronics. I find Sony electronics and buttons (ever broke one?) to be the best and most rugged. I have pushed more than one Mitsubishi button clear into the bezel(never to return), and Mitsubishi is no slouch on quality.
Sony *monitors* last so long that you may wish that they didn't.

I have a IIYAMA Vision Master Pro 19" that I love. Was costly when I bought it 2 years ago ($650) but since have come way down in price. with 19" Diamondtron NF(TM) TrueFlat CRT
Bandwidth: 300MHz
Horizontal Frequency: 30-115KHz
Vertical Frequency: 50-160Hz
these scream for gamers and worth every penny spent
also support mini 15 pin( standard ) and BNC connectors
new models have built in USB ports for around $400 a steal
or way less if refurbished or used.
THIS IS THE LAST CRT MONITOR I WILL EVER BUY NEW!!!!
mine is A901HT (Pro450)

Hey all
I remember a couple years back, Samsung monitors as well as some other low cost monitors made a high pitched ringing noise. Have they gotten rid of that d*** noise? And why was it so loud on these monitors? Any ideas? Thanks.

Hi Kurylo,
Yeah.....it's tough wading through all the models. I've found these two Samsung monitors as generally being solid all around:
Samsung 955DF (as jjkusaf mentioned.....can't beat it's price!)
Samsung 900IFT (0.20 dot pitch!, Dynaflat tube, etc. but a bit more expensive than the 955DF)
These two also get generally very positive reviews so you really can't go wrong with either of these shadow mask based monitors.
Unforutnately, BipolarBill brought up a very vaild point on quality. Why do I say unfortunately? This is because it's a hot topic for me. I won't go into this one in this threadbut it may be worthy of a topic for discussion in the future.....if anyone cares to talk about it.
Finally, to Fat_Rob........
Samsung used to target low budget, low quality products many, many years ago. Now they have transitioned into making higher quality products which are much better than in years past (sort of like Japanese auto companies changing form the 1970's to now).......so your comment is valid for the Samsung monitors of old.....not new (thank goodness).

unless you have already decided I would put viewsonic on your list they have been around for a while and they make nice glass. If you wanna go samsung I think the 900nf if there highest quility monitor around 350 (not including shipping). You might want to check out the pf790 it has a maximum resolution of 1600x1200@77hz an aperature gille pitch and it has a perfect flat screen like mine let me tell you they are perfectly flat i even put a ruler to it. its about 420-450 without shipping. check it out here

heres a review which helped me buy my monitor.

also heres pcworld's top ten if u like them (i dont)
http://www.pcworld.com/reviews/article/0,aid,73854,pg,2,00.asp
The aperature grill lines on my monitor really dont bother me. whenever i see them it justs reminds me of quaility. but thats just me and i rarely see them.
good luck on your decision buying the right monitor was one the toughest calls i had to make when purchasing my computer i am very happy with my desicion as im sure u will be with yours.

Thank you all for your real help !!! I think I'll go with Samsung 957DF because 955DF has less bandwidth not suitable for me, or 900NF. Quality Sony monitor is too expensive for me to buy.
BTW, I don't think I'll see the difference between Sony and Samsung, because either of them produce good monitors (anyways, no any manufacturer would produce bad things, because it is not commercially right: who will buy them?).
I'll go and watch for these monitors tomorrow, and will tell you what did I notice.
Thank you, but if you have another opinions, post them here, because anything more than $100 is very expensive for me.

Hi Kurylo,
Good luck......
Keep in mind your two choices are based on different tubes:
900NF (aperture grill)
957DF (shadow mask)
This makes it a bit more difficult to decide since there may be some noticeable differences in image quality.
I'll be interested in hearing how your eyes view the situation.

Today I was on the shop and watched 2 monitors:
1) LG 915FT+ and
2) Samsung SM900NF.
Yes, I saw those damper wires in Samsung you've told about. And I can't live with them. First I thought that it is a faulty monitor. But then... No, AG is out. Really, it is very annoying watching them. I just don't understand why didn't manufacturers do them from the transparent material.
BTW, why are they here?
Either of them is good. I did not notice any difference in quality.
But LG seems to have more bandwidth.
I will not buy this monitor right now. It's a time to go to study, and all the work will do my busy father. So, I expect it for 1-2 weeks. But for this time I will post my thoughts and questions here. I don't want to buy a monitor being overpriced and with bad quality.
Next week I'll try to go and to see a shadow mask 957DF monitor.

I read an article that they reduce grille vibration

I have a Samsung SyncMaster 955DF and I am very satisfied with the quality. I highly recommend this monitor. I had a Sony monitor before and the picture wasn't quite straight no matter how much I adjusted it. Another point to consider, I heard Samsung is the biggest tube manufacturer in the world. They make very good monitors.
Kurylo
02-09-2002, 02:59 AM
O.K. Now I think to buy
a) Samsung 957DF, not 955, because 957's have more bandwidth (more Hz in a larger resolutions).
b) LG 915FT+. You all keep saying that LG isn't very god... Actually I saw one. And I didn't notice a poor quality. It was standing near 900IFT and didn't seem to be worse...

you asked why the wires are there...well. they are there as a part of the implosion protection..they eep the grille from vibrating and possibly resonating to the tube causing it to...you know lol. i've dropped old monitors out windows and smashed old 19 inch screens with cinder blocks....and lemme tell you the only screens that i found didn't make a total mess were the 1989 19" hitachi monitors..they didn't throw glass everywhere...however sony screens demolished and blew glass and parts everywhere. i'd never sit in front of a sony...i've been thinking about making a small site that tells what the results of the diffrent screens were....lol but that sounded like a stupid idea because who cares about implosion results right?

Wow! At last I have free time!
Tomorrow or the day after tomorrow I will go and buy one monitor.
But I have another question: I was told that 19" monitors aren't good to watch at from the 1 meter distance. The best view is at the 1.5-2 meters distance. I don't want to sit in the anothere side of my room (joke, of course) to watch at my monitor.
What do you think about it?
