I will be backing up to a cd rw, files and folders. Protecting against lost data ie crashes ect. thanks

Yes.
But for you it would depend on your specific needs.
What would you like to back-up?
(Files and folders, compleate system).
What type of media will you be backing up to?
(Hard drive, removable disks, CD's).
What are you trying to protect against?
(Crashes and mistakes, hardware failure, theft or loss of computer).

If you are going to keep it to one CD, Microsoft's utility back-up in accessories/tools works fine. It won't span to a second CD, (at least it would'nt for me)
After the first back up session, it has the option for "changed & added" files for update witch is pretty quick.
