Im lookin to buy a new cpu for my system.......I have a mobo and everything. But I'm torn between the Athlon xp and Thunderbird. I'm lookin at runnin my system at about 1400 megahertz so that brings me to the athlon xp 1600+ or the thunderbird at 1400. I want something that runs cool. I don't want to have tyo worry about overheating at all. I've heard that the xp line grows incredibly hot. But I don't want a slow comp. Is there that big of a performance difference between the xp and the thunderbird? Dos anyone know if the xp runs hotter than the thunderbird? Help thanks!!!

xps don't run too hot (or else how could they sell them) as long as you cool them properly. there is a very noticable difference in performance so unless you have minimal needs get the xp and a decent fan (don't forget the thermal paste) and you'll be whizzing through your games. the t-bird is a good processor but now dated as the xp has a different architecture as well as the new instruction sets. go for that one as long as your wallet can stand it.

Amds are faster but they also run hotter, if you get an amd get also a big powerful fan.
I had an amd tbird 1.3 and everytime I played a game computer would freeze.

The XP processors run cooler than the Thunderbirds. I built a system for a friend, using a KG7-RAID mobo and an XP1600+ processor w/ a Thermaltake Volcano 6cu+ cooler. With a case temp of 82ºF, the CPU idled at 78ºF and topped out at 104ºF @ 100% load. Ya can't get much cooler running than that:D:D
No, that's not a typo, the CPU would actually idle 4º cooler than the case temp, I'm thinking that it may have had something to do with where the case temp thermistor was located.

XPs run cooler and have a few little features that T-Birds dont. If you've got the few extra bucks, get an XP. ;)

Hey, miggetyMike, we are the friends !!! I wanna exactly the same upgrade, and I choose Athlon XP 1600+. Why?
1) (+) It is faster than TB 1400MHz (has the same speed as TB 1600MHz);
2) (+) It is cooler;
3) (+) It has an SSE (!!!) technology implemented;
4) (+) It is newer;
5) (-) It is $15 more expensive.
There are more pluses than minuses. I think it's understood what to buy.

I had the same problem with 1.4Ghz. I did a complete rebuild of the harddrive and all is okay now. I couldn't pinpoint the culprit, but I'm pretty sure that it was combination of using programs like GTU.
