With Windows 9x you could install from the hard drive by copying the files from the win9x folder to your hard drive and running setup.exe from there.

Can this be done with XP (Home and Pro)? Thanks.

Yes, it can be copied to HDD. But the MS-DOS setup program lies in another directory. Actually, WIN_INST_DIR/i386/winnt.exe
Be sure to run Smartdrv.exe before.
