I had ordered one of these drives from alienware but when it came i looked inside to find a seagate i think the mane difference is acces time ibm 8.5, seagate 9.5. The thing is when asked why i sent sent this seagate peice of **** they told me ibm was being sued for hd failures in their 60gxp's. I just read an article in maximum pc which crowned the 60gxp hd of the year. has anyone else heard of this prob with the 60gxp. I know they had probs with the 75gxp.??

I have heard a lot of people making alot of noise about problems with these drives, but I personaly have one of each in my pc(one 30GB 75GXP and one 41Gb 60GXP) and they have both worked fine since I bought them, and I have had the 75GXP for well over a year now, so I wouldn't bee too woried, after all, (*** long as you back up) the thing is covered by a waranty isn't it?

My IBM 60gxp every now and then "disappears" and I get a message on the screen, "new hardware found".
The drive then is always called ibi-@tha)307060 and appears as an unformatted drive. I never choose to format it.. well, maybe the first few times. Then it worked for a long time so I started using it to put data on. Wrong.......
After a while - sometimes immediately, sometimes weeks later, it lets me update it's driver and the drive comes back!
Well, right now it's a device called ibi-@tha)307060 and is useless. I was just going to look into returning it after reading about the problems with theses drives. Of course I never got to backing up or moving the data... stuck again. Sucks.
Easy Recovery says it can save some data... except I really have about a million mp3s on it.
Anyone have this same problem?

I've got a 60GXP 40 GB. It's a lot faster than my Quantum AS 40, but about a few months ago it started making a high pitched buzz. I've run the drive fitness test countless time, but everything checks out.

The problems are only localized in 75GXP models.
60GXP are just fine.

Sorry... just noticed my drive _is_ a 75gxp. I was just following the conversation.
I don't think I can actually find the words "75gxp" on the drive, but it is a model in the 75gxp line. But it does say it on my receipt :=)

My advice:
Call Alienware technical support. Not the warranty company, which is a totally worthless third-party ASP. Ask to speak to Roland Poitevien, who is the head of technical support. Don't bother talking to anyone else unless you feel like dancing. If he's not there, keeping calling until you reach him. Tell him what happened, and make arrangements to send back the drive. Raise holy hell if necessary, make sure that he gives you an RMA number. I'd also insist that they pay for the shipping, since you didn't order the Seagate, which means you should also insist on having their FedEx account number for a free return. Call as often as needed, just like taking an aspirin for a nagging headache that won't go away. This is the only way to get a functional, correct response from the idjits in Miami.
I've dealt with these people on and off for over three years, and I know what I'm talking about. If you don't take charge, you will get no satisfaction. The sales, tech, and shipping departments act like they are a hundred miles apart and only communicate in Morse Code.
Mr. Poitevien is well aware that the lawsuit is aimed at the 75GXP series, and not for the newer 60GXP's. In fact, I may have been the first person to make him aware of the problem, when IBM was still insisting on replacing dead 75GXP's with refurbished units of the same series.
They no longer do that ... they send 60GXP's as replacements.
Make them send you the correct drive, spidey ... or send it back ... get your money, and buy the drive from a reputable outfit, like Dirt Cheap Hard Drives (http://www.dirtcheapdrives.com/).
If you do send it back, keep an eye on your credit card bill. Things like this are often beneath their notice.

Don't believe a word these people say, dude ... especially Gavin. That guy has a picture of his face in the dictionary next to "weasel". He spends more time covering up for his laziness and mistakes than any three other people combined. It speaks volumes about the work ethic at the company that he wasn't fired, long ago.
Talk to Roland, and no one else on the support staff. Or ... ask to speak to Alex Aguila, who is the CEO and owner of the company. That'll get their attention! Alex doesn't like being disturbed over problems with the sales and support staff.
It's perfectly obvious why the company is called Alienware. They like to sneak around and do painful things behind your back that you'd rather not remember in the morning.

i didnt get that guy you were talking aobut Roland he wasnt there. Instead i got some other shmuck he said they no longer ship any ibm drives larger than 40gig, whatsoever :( oh well i think this is a losing battle. The thing that pisses me off most is that they didnt even tell me i had to look in my case to find out. Plus they still sell the 8.5ms drive on their website those scumbags heheheheee
i think thats false advertising. i guess i learned my lesson, never fight the man :(
thanks for all your help though.
